The Uncanny is part of the ebook Ghosts: historiographies, cultural manifestations, and the knits they've inspired.
Inspired by the often subtly uncanny features of ghosts, these socks feature lovely twisted cables that cross and dance over the top of the foot and leg. They trace all the way up to the cuff, where they integrate with the twisted ribbing which finishes off the pattern.
The Uncanny are toe-up, using the Eastern/Turkish Method cast on and short row heels.

The Uncanny Socks by Teresa Gregorio
What Is Being Made
The Uncanny is an advanced knitted sock pattern inspired by the Indian bhut, a ghost from folklore depicted as a human figure with one distinctly otherworldly feature: backwards-facing feet. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a pair of toe-up socks sized for Women's US/Canada shoe size 6, with instructions provided for adjusting foot length and circumference to fit various sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that elevate it beyond basic sock construction. Knitters will work with cables to create textured stitch patterns, charts to follow complex stitch sequences, and short-rows for shaping. The socks are constructed using the toe-up method, beginning at the toes and working upward toward the cuff. The pattern also features the Eastern/Turkish Method cast-on, a specialized cast-on technique suited to toe-up sock construction. Instructional links are provided within the pattern for reference.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The foundation stitch throughout much of the pattern is stockinette stitch, worked at a gauge of 6.5 stitches and 9 rows per 1 inch. Cable stitches are incorporated as a decorative element, and the pattern uses charted instructions to guide more complex stitch work, making this design suitable for knitters with solid chart-reading experience.
Yarn and Needles
The pattern calls for Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock lightweight yarn in the colorway Harriet. One hank is required, providing 405 yards (370 meters) per 155-gram hank. The yarn is composed of 100% Superwash Merino wool, offering durability and easy care for everyday sock wear. Knitting is worked on 2.75 mm (#2) double-pointed needles, the appropriate needle size for this yarn weight and desired gauge.
Pattern Customization
While the pattern is sized for a specific shoe size, flexibility is built in. Knitters can adjust foot length by working fewer or more rounds in the section between the toe completion and the chart setup. Foot circumference can also be modified, allowing the pattern to accommodate different foot widths and sizes beyond the base sizing.
