Product Description
Meet the Sweet Shop Fairies! Sweet as sugar and so fun to make. Pattern includes instructions for knitting the doll, skirt, wings and pointed ears.
These cute fairy dolls are designed to be knitted flat in any DK weight yarn. I have provided exact yarn amounts if you wish to make all three dolls in the same yarn I used, but feel free to use my choices as suggestions only and have fun coming up with your own colour combinations!
There are no difficult stitches to learn and no gauge is required, just make sure your knitting is tight enough that it won’t stretch and allow the stuffing to show through.
The pattern has clear, written instructions as well as tips and suggestions for making your fairy doll unique.
The Sweet Shop Fairies by Star Stone Bay Knits
What Is Being Made
The Sweet Shop Fairies is a collection of knitted fairy dolls designed by Star Stone Bay Knits. Each finished doll stands 25 cm tall and features a charming fairy character complete with wings, skirt, boots, and hair. These are three-dimensional stuffed dolls perfect for imaginative play, display, or gift-giving. The design allows crafters to customize their fairies with personalized color combinations while following the designer's suggested palette.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
These fairy dolls are knitted flat using straightforward shaping techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The construction method involves knitting individual pieces that are later assembled and sewn together. The designer emphasizes the importance of maintaining tight, consistent knitting throughout the project to prevent stuffing from showing through the finished fabric. No specific gauge measurement is required, making this project more forgiving for knitters of varying experience levels, though tension control remains essential for structural integrity.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout the doll pieces, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric
- Knit (K): Fundamental stitch for building the fabric
- Purl (P): Used to create texture and pattern variation
- Knit into front and back (KFB): A single knit increase technique used for shaping the doll's body, head, and limbs
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight yarn totaling approximately 70 grams across five color yarns. The designer used Stylecraft Special DK as the example yarn but encourages crafters to substitute their favorite DK weight options. Yarn allocations include:
- Yarn A (10 grams): Knickers, tank top, stripes, and armbands
- Yarn B (15 grams): Skin tones
- Yarn C (10 grams): Boots, stripes, and accents
- Yarn D (20 grams): Skirt and wings
- Yarn E (15 grams): Hair
Needles and Tools: One pair of 3mm knitting needles serves as the primary tool for constructing the doll pieces. A size 12/2.75 mm crochet hook is included for attaching the hair, adding texture and dimension to the finished doll. A sewing needle is essential for assembling the knitted pieces and securing all components together.
Notions and Finishing: One pair of safety eyes or small buttons creates the doll's facial features, with safety eyes being the recommended choice for durability and child-safety. Approximately 45 grams of toy stuffing fills the doll to create its three-dimensional form.
Skill Level and Suitability
Rated as an intermediate project, The Sweet Shop Fairies requires basic knitting competency including familiarity with fundamental stitches and shaping techniques. The relaxed gauge requirement makes this accessible to knitters who may not have perfected precise gauge matching, though the ability to maintain consistent tension throughout remains important. The assembly and finishing steps add to the project's complexity, making it ideal for knitters ready to move beyond simple flat pieces.
