Product Description

Do you have 25 gram of sock yarn or more around? Here’s a sweet little garter stitch scarf to tide you over! The pattern repeats are easy to remember and it's ideal for quick gifts and commuter knitting. Not to say instant gratification!

It’s knit in garter stitch until halfway through the yarn before decreasing, thus maximizing the potential of your skein. The pattern includes instructions for knitting it as a triangular shawl. Sport weight yarn can also be used, and I recommend a 4.5 mm needle for this.

Materials used: Fingering yarn 110 yards – 1 skein

The Lytel Scarf That Was by Ellen Torunn Kvalheim Andresen

What Is Being Made

The Lytel Scarf That Was is a versatile knitted accessory designed to maximize yarn usage from a single skein. This pattern creates a practical scarf that measures approximately 94 cm long and 17 cm at its widest point after blocking. The design is particularly suited for using up remainder yardage from luxury fingering weight yarns, making it an economical choice for crafters who want to create something beautiful from small quantities of premium fiber. The pattern also includes alternative instructions for knitting the same design as a triangular shawl, offering flexibility in the finished garment style.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs strategic decreasing techniques to create shape and visual interest while efficiently using yarn. The scarf begins with garter stitch knitting through approximately the halfway point of the yarn before transitioning into a decrease section. This construction method ensures maximum length and usability from limited yardage. The pattern incorporates yarn overs and decreases that work together to form the characteristic shaping of the piece. Blocking is recommended to achieve the final dimensions and to even out the stitches for a polished appearance.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the scarf, created by knitting every row to produce a textured, reversible fabric
  • Knit (k): The fundamental knit stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the scarf during the decreasing section
  • Knit through front and back (kfb): An increase stitch that creates additional stitches where needed
  • Yarn over (yo): Used to create decorative holes and lacy elements, including double yarn overs (2yo) that are worked into two separate stitches in the following row
  • Purl: Used selectively in the pattern, particularly when working into yarn overs to create stitch definition

Materials and Tools

This pattern is designed for fingering weight yarn, which falls into the sport to 3-ply and 4-ply weight categories. The recommended yardage is approximately 110 yards from a single skein. The designer used Schoppel-Wolle Crazy Zauberball fingering yarn (25 grams) for the sample scarf. Knitters will need 3.5 mm needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight, along with basic notions including a darning needle for weaving in ends and a stitch marker to track progress through the pattern. The use of a marker is particularly important as the pattern includes specific instructions for moving the marker as you work past it, helping maintain pattern accuracy throughout the knitting process.

Pattern Highlights

The Lytel Scarf That Was is ideal for commuter knitting and quick gift projects due to its straightforward construction and relatively short yardage requirement. The pattern is particularly well-suited for luxury and specialty yarns where a small quantity can create a meaningful finished object. The garter stitch base makes this pattern accessible for intermediate knitters while the yarn over and decrease sections add visual complexity and interest to the final piece. The versatility of the design—offering both scarf and triangular shawl options—means a single pattern provides multiple creative possibilities for different occasions and preferences.
