What is Being Made
The Bernie Hat is a stylish, relaxed-fitting knitted hat that combines the comfort of a beanie with the elegant aesthetic of a beret. This intermediate-level knitting project is designed to fit head circumferences up to 57cm and offers a sophisticated alternative to traditional winter hat styles.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance and structure:
- Cable knitting - The pattern features cable stitch work, which adds textural interest and visual depth to the hat
- Stocking stitch (STST) - The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the hat, created by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side to produce a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Increases and decreases - Strategic shaping is achieved through make-one stitches (M1) and other increase methods to form the hat's contoured silhouette
- Cable needle work - Stitches are manipulated using a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted cable effects
Stitches Featured
The Bernie Hat Pattern utilizes the following specific stitches and abbreviations:
- C4B - Cable 4 back: slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from cable needle
- C4F - Cable 4 front: slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from cable needle
- STST - Stocking stitch, the foundation stitch for the hat body
- M1 - Make one stitch by picking up the loop between stitches and working it as a new stitch for seamless increases
- INC - Increase stitches as directed in pattern instructions
Materials and Tools
The Bernie Hat Pattern requires specific materials to achieve the intended finished fabric and fit:
- Yarn - 12 x 100g balls of Rowan Felted Tweed Aran or Rowan Brushed Fleece, providing a total of 1200g of yarn for the project
- Needles - Both 5mm and 6mm single-point needles for different sections of the pattern
- Cable needle - 6mm cable needle required for executing the cable stitches
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. Using 6mm needles and working in stocking stitch, the pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches over 26 rows to produce a 10cm square. This intermediate-level pattern is designed as one size to fit head circumferences up to 57cm.
