Product Description
This lace top was inspired by its namesake, the dyer behind Bay Street Yarns: Anne Jensen! She is such a fun, creative and talented woman. I think this knit captures her spirit and shows off her incredible dyeing expertise! This top is designed to be knit up holding two strands of fingering held together, or knitting regularly with one strand---depending on your preference when it comes to color blending! If you’re holding single, begin to stripe in your next color when you see the color changes approaching in the pattern. Your first 41 rounds will be spent creating a lace yoke that mimics colorwork! Instead of a contrast color creating a pattern, you’re creating a design simply using yo’s. My hope was to create a fresh take on yoke-based, top-down knitting. I hope you enjoy this challenging project! Make sure to check out Anne’s work over at Bay Street Yarns, and support your local indie dyers and LYS!
The Anne Pullover by Born & Raised Knits
What is Being Made
The Anne Pullover is a knitted top designed as a beginner-friendly pullover sweater. This downloadable knitting pattern offers nine different sizes, making it accessible for a wide range of body measurements. The pullover features a multi-color construction using four distinct yarns in complementary colorways, creating visual interest through strategic color placement throughout the garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for knitters developing their skills. The primary construction method is knitting in the round, which creates seamless fabric and is worked on circular needles. The pattern incorporates color blending, allowing knitters to work with multiple yarn colors in a single project for aesthetic variety. Additional techniques include increasing and decreasing in the round, essential skills for shaping the body and sleeve sections of the pullover. The pattern also features lace knitting, adding delicate openwork details to elevate the design beyond basic stockinette construction.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The foundation of The Anne Pullover is stockinette stitch, which serves as the primary fabric base and is used for gauge measurement. The inclusion of lace knitting introduces more complex stitch patterns that create decorative openwork sections, providing visual texture and sophistication to the finished garment.
Materials and Yarn Information
The Anne Pullover is designed to be worked with yarn held double, though the pattern provides yardage adjustments for single-strand knitting. The pattern calls for three colors of John Henry Sock yarn by Bay Street Yarns:
- Color A: 'Jealousy' – 380 to 480 yards depending on size
- Color B: 'Penny Royal' – 400 to 500 yards depending on size
- Color C: 'Computer Camp' – 200 to 280 yards depending on size
An accent yarn is also included:
- Color D: 'Cheshire' in Hazel Mohair Laceweight, held single – 200 to 280 yards depending on size
The pattern specifies US 4 circular needles in 24-inch length for the body, with 9 to 16-inch needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) recommended for sleeve sections. Additional notions required include a darning needle for finishing and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points. The yarn weight is 3-ply, providing a lightweight fabric suitable for a versatile pullover.
