Product Description
This cowl is completely reversible, so both sides look great! Wear it long or doubled up around your neck for added warmth. The cowl is made with only 1 skein of yarn (202 yds). It can be made wider and/or longer with an extra skein of yarn, if desired. Any DK weight or worsted weight yarn can be used.
The cowl pattern is written in US crochet terms. It includes photo tutorials (right-handed and left-handed) for working in the back bump of the foundation chain, as well as making FPdc (Front Post double crochet) and BPdc (Back Post double crochet) stitches.
This is a great pattern to learn and practice doing FPdc and BPdc!
Swanky Cowl by Susan Lowman
What Is Being Made
The Swanky Cowl is a crocheted neck cowl designed as an easy beginner-level project. This finished accessory measures approximately 3 1/2 inches wide by 40 inches in circumference, making it a versatile piece suitable for casual wear. The pattern allows for customization, as crafters can make a wider cowl by using 2 balls of yarn instead of 1.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This pattern showcases post stitches as the primary technique, which create the distinctive textured appearance of the finished cowl. The two main post stitches used are:
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) — worked by inserting the hook around the front of the post of the stitch from the previous row
- Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc) — worked by inserting the hook around the back of the post of the stitch from the previous row
These post stitches alternate throughout the pattern to build texture and visual interest. The pattern also incorporates fundamental crochet stitches including chain stitches (ch), slip stitches (sl st), and double crochet (dc). The cowl is worked in the round, as indicated by the use of rounds (rnd) in the pattern structure.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 post stitches (8 FPdc and 8 BPdc) measuring 4 inches, with 10 rows equaling 3 1/2 inches. Maintaining proper gauge ensures the cowl achieves the intended finished dimensions and drape.
Materials and Tools
The Swanky Cowl is designed to be made with Red Heart Boutique Swanky yarn in worsted weight. This yarn is composed of 62% acrylic and 38% polyester, offering durability and ease of care. One ball provides 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and 202 yards (185 meters) of yarn, which is sufficient for the cowl shown in the pattern. Crafters will need a Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook or the size required to achieve the specified gauge, plus a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Skill Level
This project is rated as Easy and is suitable for beginner crocheters. The pattern includes photo tutorials to guide crafters through the post stitch techniques, making it an excellent introduction to textured crochet work.
