Product Description

Double-thick cuff with embedded ear flaps!

This hat starts with a provisional cast on and is worked down to the ears and back up for extra warmth. Asymmetrical short rows are used halfway through the cuff to add extra length around the ears, so the hat will keep your ears warm and stay out of you eyes without needing to be tugged into place.

Hat rests at about 17" unstretched. It was made to fit a head about 23" and can still fit heads a bit larger than that.

You'll need US 9[5.5mm] needles to make the cuff and the decreases at the top of the hat, which will require DPNs or a circular cable long enough to use magic loop. You'll need US 7[4.5mm] for the braid right above the cuff and US 10.5[6.5mm] for the cables in the body of the hat - these can be 16" circulars, circulars long enough to do magic loop, or DPNs.

Sun Peak Hat by Kjosen Day

What is Being Made

The Sun Peak Hat is a knitted winter hat designed by Kjosen Day, featuring a distinctive double-thick cuff with embedded ear flaps. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a warm, functional hat that rests at approximately 17 inches unstretched and is designed to fit heads around 23 inches in circumference, with flexibility for slightly larger sizes. The asymmetrical construction ensures the hat stays in place without constant adjustment while providing excellent ear coverage.

Construction and Design Features

This hat employs a unique construction method that begins with a provisional cast on, allowing the knitter to work downward to the ears and then back upward. This innovative approach creates the double-thick cuff structure that gives the hat its signature warmth and durability. The asymmetrical short rows are strategically placed halfway through the cuff to add extra length specifically around the ear area, providing targeted warmth where it matters most for winter wear.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

  • Provisional Cast On: Used at the beginning to allow for the reversible cuff construction
  • Asymmetrical Short Rows: Incorporated halfway through the cuff to create extended ear coverage
  • Cable Stitches: Featured in the body of the hat for visual interest and structural integrity
  • Braided Detail: A braid section sits directly above the cuff, adding textural contrast
  • Decreases: Strategic decreases shape the crown of the hat

Needles and Materials

The Sun Peak Hat pattern requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different stitch patterns throughout the design. US 9 needles (5.5mm) are used for the cuff and the crown decreases, which can be worked using double-pointed needles or circular needles with the magic loop technique. US 7 needles (4.5mm) are required for the braid section positioned above the cuff. US 10.5 needles (6.5mm) are used for the cable sections in the hat body and can be worked on 16-inch circular needles, longer circulars suitable for magic loop, or double-pointed needles. The pattern calls for aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up efficiently while providing the necessary warmth and structure for this winter accessory.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Sun Peak Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex techniques. The pattern requires familiarity with provisional cast ons, short row shaping, cable stitches, and working with multiple needle sizes and needle types, making it an excellent project for developing advanced knitting competencies.
