Product Description

This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.

Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.

You will need 2 colors of yarn - one for the background and one for the crown. This is a great way to use up scraps! For projects using 2 colors, (one for the background & one for the featured design), you will need approximately 2 oz of each color for a worsted or aran (wt 4) type of yarn.

Pattern is in US crochet terms.

Summer Vacay Mosaic Square - Royal Crown Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Summer Vacay Mosaic Crochet Square in the Royal Crown design is a decorative crochet square created by designer Cyndie Birdsong. This pattern is part of the Summer Vacay series and is specifically designed for use in cushion projects. The Royal Crown motif captures the nostalgic charm of summer memories, drawing inspiration from iconic summer destinations and family celebrations. This square can be used as a standalone decorative element or incorporated into larger projects such as pillows, blankets, or other home décor items.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs the overlay mosaic crochet technique, a method that creates dimensional, multi-colored designs by layering stitches on top of a base fabric. Mosaic crochet allows crafters to work with multiple colors while maintaining clean, structured patterns without frequent color changes within rows. The overlay technique specifically adds depth and visual interest by building design elements on top of the foundation stitches, creating a sophisticated finished appearance ideal for decorative squares.

Stitches and Construction

While the specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, mosaic crochet squares typically utilize fundamental stitches such as single crochet and half double crochet for the base structure, combined with strategic stitch placement to create the overlay pattern effects. The Royal Crown design requires careful attention to stitch placement and color work to achieve the intricate mosaic appearance characteristic of this technique.

Materials and Yarn Weight

This pattern is designed to work with aran weight and worsted weight yarns, providing excellent stitch definition and durability for finished cushion projects. The yarn weight selection ensures that the mosaic pattern details remain clearly visible and well-defined. Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized to match their chosen yarn weight, typically in the range suitable for worsted and aran yarns. The specific yardage and color requirements are detailed within the full downloadable PDF pattern.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. The overlay mosaic method requires understanding of basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow complex stitch-by-stitch instructions with color changes and pattern placement. Crafters should be comfortable reading detailed row-by-row directions and managing multiple colors throughout the project.
