Product Description
INFO Judy of Giggling Gecko Yarns is one of my closest friends I’ve met through knitting. An easy friendship with love and encouragment throughout our lives. For me it was clear to design a geometric pattern with flowing, continious and rounded out infinity chains in a metal looking color to emphasize the strength and bond. These are also chains that connect all of us out there who create their circles of love and friendships with one another.
’Strong chains’ is worked flat from the top down, starting with a garter tab. Stitches are increased every row along the edges to create the crescent shape.
The pattern is fully written out with stitch counts and includes a chart for the repeats.
YARN Giggling Gecko Yarns, Sportlandia (100% SW Merino, 100 gr-287yds/262m). Sample yardage, 817 yds/747m in color Gravel Grey.
Or any Sport weight yarn: approx. 809-930yds (740-850m).
GAUGE - BLOCKED 4” (10 cm) In garter stich, 18 stitches x 40 rows. In cable pattern, 25 stitches x 31 rows.
Strong Chains Knit Shawl by Gretha Mensen
What Is Being Made
Strong Chains is a geometric knit shawl designed by independent designer Gretha Mensen and inspired by the friendship between the designer and Judy of Giggling Gecko Yarns. The shawl features a crescent shape with flowing, continuous, and rounded infinity chain motifs in a metal-looking colorway that emphasizes strength and connection. The design celebrates the bonds and circles of love created through knitting and friendship communities.
Construction and Shaping Techniques
This shawl is worked flat from the top down, beginning with a garter tab cast-on. The crescent silhouette is achieved through strategic increases worked every row along the edges, creating a gradual widening that produces the distinctive curved shape. This top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the shawl as it develops and customize the final size by working additional rows before binding off.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch structure is garter stitch, which creates a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. The geometric chain pattern is integrated throughout the design, with the flowing motifs creating visual interest while maintaining the meditative quality of garter stitch knitting. Cable techniques are employed to form the chain elements, requiring a cable needle for crossing stitches and creating the three-dimensional chain effects.
Yarn and Materials
The sample was knit using Giggling Gecko Yarns Sportlandia, a 100% superwash merino yarn in the colorway Gravel Grey. This yarn comes in 100-gram skeins with 287 yards per skein. The sample shawl required approximately 817 yards (747 meters) of yarn. Knitters may substitute any sport weight yarn with yardage requirements between 809 and 930 yards (740 to 850 meters), allowing flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining consistent gauge and finished dimensions.
Needles and Tools Required
- Circular or straight needles in US 6 (4.0 mm) size, measuring 32 to 40 inches (minimum 80 to 100 centimeters)
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases
- Cable needle for executing cable stitches that form the chain motifs
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern specifies a blocked gauge of 18 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and drape of the shawl. The crescent shape will measure approximately 32 to 40 inches across when blocked, depending on the amount of yarn used and the number of rows worked.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty. While garter stitch itself is a beginner-friendly technique, the combination of shaping increases, cable work, and geometric pattern integration requires solid knitting fundamentals, comfort with reading charts or written instructions, and experience managing multiple techniques simultaneously. Knitters should be confident with cable techniques and have experience blocking shawls before beginning this project.
