What is Being Made
The Squirrel Potholder is a decorative and functional kitchen accessory created using tapestry crochet techniques. This finished potholder measures 6.7 inches (17 cm) by 7.3 inches (18.5 cm) and features a charming squirrel design worked in contrasting colors. The potholder serves as both a practical heat-protective tool for handling hot cookware and a decorative accent for the kitchen.
Craft and Techniques
Tapestry Crochet is the primary technique used in this project. Tapestry crochet is an advanced colorwork method that allows crafters to create intricate, multi-colored designs by carrying yarn colors inside the stitches as they work. This technique produces a dense, reversible fabric with clean color transitions, making it ideal for pictorial designs like the squirrel motif in this potholder.
The potholder is constructed in two distinct sections. The main body is worked in rows to establish the squirrel design, and then a decorative border is added by working in rounds around the completed piece. This two-part construction method allows the tapestry crochet pattern to be clearly established before finishing the edges with a professional border treatment.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc) – The potholder is worked entirely in single crochet stitch, which creates a tight, dense fabric perfect for tapestry crochet colorwork and provides durability for kitchen use.
- Chain (ch) – Used for foundation and pattern construction.
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds when working the border.
- Picot Stitch – Incorporated into the border design for added decorative detail and texture.
- Front Loop Only (FLO) – A technique variation that may be used to create specific textural effects within the pattern.
Materials and Specifications
This project requires DK weight (3, Light) cotton yarn in two contrasting colors. The designer used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK, with Color A (Vanilla Cream, shade 408) requiring 50–55 yards (45–50 meters) and Color B (Soft Fudge, shade 410) requiring 30–35 yards (27–32 meters). Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for potholders as it is heat-resistant, durable, and easy to care for.
A 3.0-mm crochet hook (size C/2 USA, size 11 UK) is used throughout the project. The recommended gauge is 28 single crochet stitches over 26 rows in a 4-inch (10 cm) square when worked in tapestry crochet, ensuring the finished potholder has the correct dimensions and appropriate density for functional kitchen use.
A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends after completion, a standard finishing step for crochet projects.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the skill required to execute tapestry crochet techniques successfully. While the stitch vocabulary is limited to single crochet and basic stitches, the colorwork method demands attention to tension, color management, and pattern reading. Crafters should have foundational crochet knowledge before attempting this project, though a video tutorial is provided to support the learning process.
