Product Description
Celebrating an integral part of Canadian history in honour of our country’s 150th birthday, this hat features a wide brim of cabled canoes and a crown formed of cabled paddles. In a land where outdoor enjoyment often requires a little extra insulation, don your woolies and get out on the water.
The brim of the hat is worked first in one long strip, starting with a provisional cast-on so that it can be seamed with the opposite end using a three-needle bind-off (tutorial links included).
Once seamed, stitches are picked up around the top edge of the brim to knit the crown of the hat. The top edge has one selvage stitch, which makes it easy to identify each individual edge stitch when picking up stitches.
Pattern includes full written as well as charted instructions.
Special Techniques: Cabling, provisional cast-on, three-needle bind-off, picking up stitches along a selvage edge, knitting in the round.
Soft is the Song my Paddle Sings Hat Pattern
Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern by designer Alexis Hoy creates a Canadian-inspired hat celebrating outdoor heritage and paddling culture. The design features a distinctive wide brim decorated with cabled canoe motifs and a crown formed of cabled paddle stitches. The pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters and works with worsted weight yarn in two size options.
What is Being Made
A knitted hat with integrated cable stitch designs that pay homage to Canadian paddling traditions. The hat combines a structured brim featuring repeating canoe cable patterns with a crown section showcasing paddle cable designs. This piece is designed for practical outdoor wear, providing warmth and insulation for water-based activities and cold weather conditions.
Sizes and Fit
- S/M: Fits head circumference 20 - 21 inches (51 - 53 cm) with 3 - 4 inches (7.5 - 10 cm) negative ease
- M/L: Fits head circumference 21 - 22 inches (53 - 56 cm) with 3 - 4 inches (7.5 - 10 cm) negative ease
Techniques Used
This pattern employs cable knitting techniques as the primary design element. Cable stitches create the three-dimensional texture and visual interest throughout the hat. The pattern uses standard knitting techniques including increases (KFBF - knit front, back, front), cable crosses (C32F, C31F, C31B), and alternating knit and purl stitches to form the structured brim and decorative crown sections.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P): Purl stitches used in combination with knits to create texture and definition
- Cable Stitches: KFBF (knit front, back, front) for increases; C32F and C31F (cable crosses front); C31B (cable cross back) creating the canoe and paddle motifs
- Increases: KFBF technique to shape the crown and increase stitch counts as needed
Materials
This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating structured, durable knitwear with good stitch definition. Worsted weight yarn allows the cable patterns to display clearly while providing adequate warmth and insulation. Knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required, though specific needle size recommendations are included in the complete pattern documentation.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with cable stitches and following row-by-row instructions. The cable work requires attention to stitch placement and cable crossing sequences, making it an excellent project for developing cable knitting proficiency.
Design Inspiration
Created by Alexis Hoy in 2017 to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday, this hat draws inspiration from the poem "The Song My Paddle Sings" by E. Pauline Johnson. The design honors the cultural significance of paddling and canoeing in Canadian history while providing practical headwear for outdoor enthusiasts who spend time on the water.
