Product Description
I call this one “oxymoronic”, which just about sums up a knitted snowman tea cosy in an Australian summer! He is quick to make and takes less than 2 balls of "bobble" type yarn (eg "Ping pong" or "Marshmallow") and 1 ball of 8 ply/DK, plus little bits for scarf and hat.
Snowman Tea Cosy by Rian Anderson
What is Being Made
The Snowman Tea Cosy is a whimsical knitted tea cosy designed to fit a standard 6-8 cup teapot. This playful design features a snowman motif and measures approximately 48 cm all around at the widest part with a height of 23 cm at the centre. The cosy is engineered to accommodate typical teapot dimensions of approximately 15 cm diameter and 12-15 cm height from base to lid, with a spout opening of 8-9 cm and a handle opening of 10-12 cm. This creative piece brings a charming winter aesthetic to tea service, making it an ideal decorative and functional accessory for tea lovers.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project employs bobble stitch as its signature technique, creating the distinctive textured appearance characteristic of a snowman. The bobbles are created using specialty bobble yarn worked in combination with standard DK weight yarn, allowing the designer to achieve dimensional texture and visual interest. The pattern utilizes two different needle sizes to manage the varying yarn weights and create appropriate tension throughout the project. The construction involves seaming techniques using a tapestry needle to join knitted pieces together, and the design includes shaping for functional openings to accommodate the teapot's spout and handle.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Snowman Tea Cosy requires a combination of specialty and standard yarns to achieve its distinctive appearance:
- White bobble yarn – 70 gms (such as Moda Vera "Marshmallow" or Sean Sheep "Ping Pong"; approximately 50 gms equals 30 m)
- White 8 ply/DK weight yarn – 35 gms, worked together with the bobble yarn
- 8 ply/DK yarn for scarf detail – 5 gms each of 2 contrasting colours
- Orange 8 ply/DK yarn – small amount for the snowman's nose
- Grey or brown 8 ply/DK yarn – 10 gms optional, for knitting a hat accent
- Dacron toy filling – for stuffing the snowman head
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two pairs of needles to manage the different yarn weights and achieve proper tension. A pair of 5 mm (US 8) needles is used for the main body sections worked with the combined bobble and DK yarns, though needle size may need adjustment depending on individual yarn thickness and desired tension. A pair of 3.75 mm (US 5) needles is used for sections requiring a tighter gauge. A large tapestry needle is essential for seaming the knitted pieces together and weaving in yarn ends throughout the project.
