Product Description
I am always wanting a new hat to wear and as winter is approaching I decided to create one with yarn that had been gifted to me. This will fit most adult sized heads. It’s a loose fit, so you might need to adjust to suit.
You will need worsted weight yarn for this - approx 160m. A 5.5mm and 4.5mm hook.
This pattern includes instructions for all of the stitches used and is in both UK and US terms.
Slouchie Beanie by Seona Roberts
What is Being Made
The Slouchie Beanie is a relaxed-fit adult crochet hat designed by Seona Roberts. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a slouchy-style beanie with a loose, comfortable fit that accommodates most adult-sized heads. The finished hat measures approximately 22cm from top to bottom with a 28cm width across the brim (half the total width). The loose fit allows for customization to suit individual head sizes and personal style preferences.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several key techniques to create its distinctive textured appearance. The primary stitch structure uses double crochet as the foundation stitch, with a gauge of 3 double crochets over 2 rows measuring 2.5cm. The most notable design feature is the creation of textured ridges throughout the hat using back post double crochet and back post treble stitches, which add visual interest and dimensional texture to the finished piece.
The pattern incorporates standard crochet techniques including:
- Chain stitches for foundation and construction
- Slip stitches for joining rounds
- Single crochet stitches for shaping and structure
- Double crochet stitches as the primary stitch throughout
- Back post double crochet for creating textured ridges
- Back post treble stitches for enhanced texture variation
The pattern includes increase rounds during construction, with the option to adjust the final size by stopping increases earlier if a smaller hat is desired.
Materials and Tools Required
The Slouchie Beanie pattern calls for worsted weight yarn totaling 160 meters or 174 yards. The designer used a 100-gram acrylic yarn ball for the sample. Two crochet hooks are required: a 5.5mm hook for the main construction and a 4.5mm hook for finishing. Additional materials include a needle for weaving in yarn ends and an optional stitch marker to help track rounds during construction.
Pattern Details and Design Notes
Created by designer Seona Roberts under the project title Honouring M.E., this pattern reflects the designer's love of creating texture in crochet work. The ridged texture achieved through back post stitches gives the beanie its distinctive character and visual appeal. The pattern is presented in downloadable PDF format with clear abbreviations provided in both US and UK crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters using either standard.
