She Wore Blue Knitted Socks by Ruth Garcia-Alcantud
What Is Being Made
She Wore Blue is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by Ruth Garcia-Alcantud. This top-down sock construction features a sophisticated combination of lace and cable stitch work, creating what the designer describes as "a riot of cables and lace" that delivers a memorable finished garment despite its technical complexity.
Construction Method
The sock is constructed from the top down, beginning at the leg and working toward the foot. This approach allows for easy customization of sock length and fit. The pattern incorporates a structured heel flap, a traditional sock construction element that provides durability and a professional finish to the heel area where socks experience the most wear.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Elements
The design combines multiple advanced knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
- Cable stitches: The pattern uses cable crosses including C2B (cable 2 back) and C2F (cable 2 front), where stitches are held on a cable needle while others are knitted, then the held stitches are knitted to create twisted rope-like textures
- Lace work: Openwork lace sections are incorporated throughout, created using yarn overs and decreases (ssk, k2tog, p2tog, ssp) to form decorative holes and patterns
- Stockinette base: Knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the pattern, with knit stitches on the right side creating smooth fabric
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for HazelKnits Artisan Sock yarn in a 4-ply weight. One skein provides 400 yards (366 meters) and weighs 120 grams (4.23 ounces), offering sufficient yardage to complete a pair of socks across all three available sizes. This yarn weight is standard for sock knitting and creates a durable, fitted garment.
Needles and Tools
Knitters may choose between two needle options: 2.5 mm (US 1½) circular needles or 2.5 mm double-pointed needles (dpns), depending on personal preference. Circular needles work well for magic loop or two-circular techniques, while dpns are traditional for sock knitting. Additional tools required include a cable needle for managing cable stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Sizing and Gauge
The pattern is available in three sizes based on leg circumference: Small (up to 10.25 inches / 26 cm), Medium (up to 11.5 inches / 29 cm), and Large (up to 12.75 inches / 32.25 cm). Achieving the correct gauge of 32 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) in pattern is essential for proper fit. Knitters should swatch and adjust needle size as needed to match this gauge before beginning the project.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, She Wore Blue requires solid foundational knitting skills including comfort with cable techniques, lace decreases, and reading stitch patterns. The combination of cables and lace in a fitted sock construction makes this pattern suitable for knitters who have completed several basic projects and are ready to expand their technical repertoire.
