Product Description
This shawl is a shallow triangle shape worked from side to side and then having the border worked along the bottom edge. It can be made in any weight yarn which will of course give you a different size shawl. I have given the measurement for sport and Dk weight but my testers have made it in yarns ranging from lace weight to aran.
It is made to provide some extra warmth around your shoulders and neck. The highlight of this shawl is the pretty border.
It can be worn in a number of ways, from draped around your neck like a scarf, worn backwards with the point in front or in the traditional way.
It uses about 500mts/550yds of Angora Design yarn from Ice yarns which is a sport weight although I thought it was a bit thinner than this. The body and the border use similar amounts of yarn.
Seafoam Fantasy has been tested by the wonderful testers in the Happy Hookers Hangout.

Seafoam Fantasy Crochet Shawl by Sarahjanedesigns
What Is Being Made
The Seafoam Fantasy is a lightweight triangular shawl designed to provide extra warmth around the shoulders and neck. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a versatile accessory that can be worn multiple ways: draped around the neck like a scarf, worn backwards with the point in front, or in the traditional shawl style. The design emphasizes a decorative border as its signature feature.
Garment Measurements
The shawl is available in two yarn weight options with corresponding dimensions:
- Sport Weight Version: 170 centimeters (67 inches) in length and 46 centimeters (18 inches) in depth
- DK Weight Version: 183 centimeters (72 inches) in length and 48 centimeters (19 inches) in depth
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This shawl is worked sideways, meaning the construction begins at one side and builds outward to create the triangular shape. The sideways construction method allows for easy stitch increases that naturally form the expanding triangle. The pattern uses straightforward crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters who have experience with basic stitches and shaping.
Stitches Used
The Seafoam Fantasy employs half treble crochet stitches (htr) as the primary stitch throughout the pattern. Instructions are provided using UK and Australian crochet terminology. The pattern also incorporates chain stitches (ch) for turning and construction purposes. The uncomplicated stitch selection makes this pattern accessible while the decorative border adds visual interest.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn: 600 meters (660 yards) of 4ply/fingering weight or 8ply/DK weight yarn, depending on desired finished size
- Hook: 5.5mm/I crochet hook, or the size needed to achieve correct tension with your chosen yarn
- Notions: A yarn needle for weaving in ends
Tension and Gauge
The recommended tension for this pattern is 15 stitches and 10 rows using a 5.5mm hook with 5ply/sport weight yarn and half treble stitches. However, the pattern notes that tension and gauge are not critical for this project if you are comfortable with slight variations in the finished size. This flexibility makes the Seafoam Fantasy an excellent choice for crafters who prefer a more relaxed approach to gauge matching.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this crochet shawl pattern is suitable for crafters with foundational crochet skills who are ready to work with shaping and border techniques. The sideways construction and stitch increases require basic understanding of pattern reading and stitch manipulation, but the straightforward stitch choices keep the project manageable.
Pattern Format
The Seafoam Fantasy is provided as a downloadable PDF file, allowing immediate access to the complete pattern instructions for printing or digital reference while working on your project.
