What Is Being Made

The design draws specific inspiration from the cactuses found in Cardones National Park in Salta province, combined with geometric details based on traditional regional weaving styles. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished garment with customizable length options to suit different body proportions and arm lengths.

Design and Colourwork Details

The jumper showcases striking colourwork on three key areas: the yoke, hips, and wrists. The central motif features cactus-inspired patterns, while geometric details throughout reflect the weaving traditions of north-western Argentina. This combination of naturalistic and geometric elements creates a visually distinctive garment that celebrates both botanical and cultural inspiration.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Sarcactus is knit in the round from the top down, beginning with neckline ribbing. The construction method includes:

• Short rows and strategic increases at the back neck to ensure a comfortable and well-fitted neckline
• Yoke shaping worked after the neckline ribbing is established
• Sleeve stitches placed on hold while the body is completed in the round
• Sleeves returned to needles and finished in the round after the body is complete
• Customizable body length to accommodate different proportions
• Options provided for varying arm lengths

Stitches Used

Yarn and Materials

The Sarcactus is designed to be knitted with Mendip DK yarn, a bouncy and tactile yarn with a slightly rustic character. The yarn is custom-spun in a small mill, contributing to the garment's unique texture and hand-feel. DK weight yarn is suitable for creating well-defined colourwork patterns while maintaining good stitch definition. Circular needles are required for the top-down, in-the-round construction method.
