What is Being Made
The Santorin sweater is a knitted pullover design available in a comprehensive range of sizes from XS through 6XL. The garment features a yoke construction with finished bust circumferences ranging from 34½ inches (88 cm) for the smallest size to 62½ inches (158½ cm) for the largest size, with 1¼ to 2 inches of positive ease included in the design. The sweater offers long sleeve options with an underarm sleeve length of 18¾ inches (48 cm), and yoke depth measurements that vary from 7¾ inches (20 cm) in the XS size to 15¾ inches (40 cm) in the largest sizes. Upper sleeve circumferences range from 11½ inches (29 cm) to 17¾ inches (45 cm) depending on the size selected.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key construction techniques. The sweater utilizes a yoke-based construction method, which is a popular approach for creating fitted shoulder and upper body shaping. The pattern incorporates stranded colorwork, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across rows to create decorative patterning. The bind-off finishing is executed using an I-cord technique, which creates a neat, decorative edge. The I-cord bind-off involves a multi-step process: knitting 2 stitches, performing a knit 2 together through the back loop (k2togtbl), and replacing the resulting 3 stitches back onto the left needle, repeating this sequence until only 3 stitches remain on the right needle.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout the garment. When working flat (back and forth), stockinette is created by knitting on the right side (RS) rows and purling on the wrong side (WS) rows. When working in the round, stockinette is achieved by knitting every round.
- Stranded pattern: A colorwork technique featured in the design, with pattern details provided on page 3 of the pattern document.
- Knit 2 together through the back loop (k2togtbl): Used as part of the I-cord bind-off technique for a decorative finished edge.
Materials
The Santorin sweater is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating garments with good drape and definition. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, allowing knitters to access the complete instructions and measurements for their chosen size. Knitters will require appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn, along with the specified yardage for their selected size.
