Product Description
This cute set of 3 Santa Tea Cozies is sure to add some festive fun to your table or dresser this Christmas. There are three sizes which can be adapted to fit most teapots.
MC: Chunky yarn in red. I used Lion Brand Alpine Wool in Chili. 2 balls made 1 large and 1 small cozy CC1: Chunky yarn in cream, white or faux fur yarn. I used Austermann Filzi in Cream. Approx. 20-30g per cozy – depends on size of your tassel! CC2: Chunky yarn in your chosen colour for Santa’s belt – optional. I used green Sirdar Softspun for the small cozy sample. A few yds CC3: Chunky yarn in pink, peach, brown or your chosen skin colour for Santa’s Nose. Just a couple of yards should do. I used three strands of Lanas Stop Bambini in place of chunky yarn because it was handy. You could use DK or Aran weight double stranded for any of the colours used to knit the cozies as long as you work to the same tension/gauge. (sts/rows per inch/cm)
Yardage: 90 - 200 yards (82 - 183 m) MC 90 yds CC1

What Is Being Made
Santa Tea Cozies are festive knitted covers designed by Loraine Birchall to fit teapots of three different capacities: 2 cup, 4-6 cup, and 6-8 cup. Each cozy features a Santa character design with arms that appear to carry gifts, topped with either a pointy hat complete with tassel or pompom, or an optional hood on the smallest size. These tea cozies combine functionality with holiday charm, making them ideal for seasonal gift-giving or festive home décor.
Techniques and Construction
The Santa Tea Cozies are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The design incorporates shaping to accommodate the varying dimensions of different teapot sizes. The Santa figure is created through strategic increases and decreases to form the body, arms, and hat structure. The pattern includes options for different hat styles—either a traditional pointy hat with a decorative tassel or pompom finish, or an alternative hood design available for the small size. This versatility allows knitters to customize their finished piece based on preference.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern, the design employs basic knitting stitches appropriate for the beginner difficulty level. The construction method allows for quick completion, particularly when working with chunky or bulky weight yarn, making these cozies excellent projects for knitters new to the craft.
Materials and Yarn
Yarn Weight: Chunky or bulky weight yarn is the primary recommendation for these tea cozies, chosen specifically for speed of knitting and gift-making efficiency. The pattern notes that Special DK yarn held double can also be used as an alternative, achieving the same tension and gauge as the chunky weight option.
Main Color (MC): Red chunky yarn forms the base of the Santa design, creating the characteristic festive appearance.
Additional Materials: The pattern requires standard knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight, as well as embellishments such as pompoms or tassels for the hat topper. The exact needle size and additional yarn colors for details are specified within the complete pattern documentation.
Pattern Details
This is a downloadable PDF pattern created as an independent designer project. The Santa Tea Cozies pattern represents Draft Pattern V1 and has been fully tested across all three sizes. The designer, Loraine Birchall, developed these cozies as companion pieces to the Festive Hoodie Mug Cozies from 2018, extending the holiday collection with larger teapot-sized versions. The pattern benefits from input and testing by experienced knitters, ensuring accuracy and quality for crafters of all skill levels.
