Please check out the #crochetcancerchallenge
This beanie was designed as part of the #crochetcancerchallenge of 2019. We decided to represent Colon Cancer, as this is something that affects one of our designers, Sara and her father.
The design is unisex; adding a faux fur pom pom really completes the look!
Worked from the bottom up, you will construct the ribbing first, then work on the body and close it up at the top.

Samantha's Hope Beanie: Beginner Crochet Hat Pattern
What is Being Made
Samantha's Hope Beanie is a crocheted hat designed by Sunflower Cottage Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern provides complete instructions for creating a finished beanie suitable for everyday wear. The design is classified as a beginner-level project, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking to build foundational skills with a practical, wearable finished object.
Craft and Technique Overview
This pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method. Crochet is a fiber arts technique that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn, forming fabric from a series of connected stitches. The crochet method allows for relatively quick project completion compared to knitting, and the technique is often considered more forgiving for beginners due to the ability to easily pick up dropped stitches.
Yarn and Materials
Samantha's Hope Beanie is designed to be worked with chunky weight yarn, which is one of the thicker yarn categories available. Chunky yarn works up quickly on larger crochet hooks, making it ideal for beginner projects and faster completion times. The pattern requires a crochet hook appropriate for chunky yarn weights, though specific hook size details should be verified within the complete pattern instructions.
Stitches and Construction
While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names used in this pattern, beginner crochet beanies typically employ fundamental stitches such as chain stitches, single crochet, and half-double crochet. These basic stitches form the foundation of most beginner crochet projects and create a dense, warm fabric suitable for hat construction.
Beginner-Friendly Design
The beginner difficulty rating indicates that Samantha's Hope Beanie requires minimal prior crochet experience. The pattern is structured to teach basic techniques while producing a finished, wearable garment—a motivating outcome for new crafters. The use of chunky yarn further supports accessibility, as thicker yarn is easier to work with and shows progress more visibly than lighter weights.
Pattern Source and Designer
This pattern is the intellectual property of Sara Marsh and Helen Wilkinson of Sunflower Cottage Crochet. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to access instructions digitally and work at their own pace. Finished beanies created from this pattern may be sold by the maker, provided appropriate credit is given to the designers.
