Posh Yarn Eva Lace - Flamingo

Product Description
I designed this shawl for my sister to wear to her wedding. We decided on the crescent shape as being both pretty and versatile, with a plain centre and a lacy border. I have always been drawn to the lovely nupps and gathered stitches of Estonian lace knitting, and this is my homage to those traditional patterns.
I wanted to make the sample out of fingering weight yarn, as the weather in Britain is not predictable in September, so it needed to be nice and warm. However it would look just as lovely made from lace weight.
Yarn: Easyknits Smoke, 100g = 335m / 366yds, 2 skeins. Posh Yarn Eva Lace, 100g = 700m / 765yds, 1 skein.
Or subsitute with 570m / 625yds lace or fingering weight yarn. I would recommend choosing yarn that will block well.
Ruth's Shawl by Emily K Williams
Overview
Ruth's Shawl is an advanced-level knitting pattern designed by Emily K Williams as a crescent-shaped wrap. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 210cm (82.5 inches) across by 55cm (21.75 inches) deep, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering and draping. The design combines a plain stockinette centre with an intricate lacy border, offering both visual interest and practical wearability.
Design Inspiration and Construction
Ruth's Shawl draws inspiration from traditional Estonian lace knitting, incorporating the distinctive nupps and gathered stitches characteristic of this heritage craft. The crescent silhouette was chosen for its aesthetic appeal and versatility, allowing the finished shawl to be worn in multiple ways. The pattern balances simplicity in the main body with complexity in the decorative border, making it an engaging project for experienced knitters.
Yarn and Needles
The pattern was originally worked in fingering weight yarn, selected for its warmth and suitability for unpredictable British autumn weather. The designer notes that the shawl would be equally beautiful when knitted from lace weight yarn, offering flexibility for different seasons and personal preferences. Specific needle specifications are included in the full pattern documentation.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced pattern employs several specialized knitting techniques fundamental to Estonian lace work:
- Nupps: Decorative bobble stitches created by working multiple yarn overs and knit stitches into a single stitch (k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1), then decreasing them on the following wrong-side row by purling 7 stitches together. These create distinctive textured bumps characteristic of traditional Estonian lace.
- Gathered stitches: Techniques that draw in fabric to create visual texture and pattern definition.
- Yarn overs: Used throughout the lacy border to create openwork and decorative holes.
- Decreases: Including 3-to-7 decreases (knit three stitches together without removing from the left needle), which are essential for shaping and managing stitch counts in lace patterns.
- Stockinette stitch: Forms the plain centre section, providing contrast to the ornate border.
Pattern Details
The pattern was published in October 2014 and includes technical editing by Steph Boardman. As a downloadable PDF, it provides complete instructions for recreating this elegant crescent shawl. The advanced difficulty rating reflects the requirement for experience with lace knitting techniques, stitch manipulation, and reading complex charted patterns.
