Product Description
Knit from the cuff down, these luxurious and playful socks can be made using scraps from other projects or with a few favorite new colours. The sample shown was knit using 9 colourways (8 semi solid and 1 handpaint for the cuffs, heels and toes) but as few as 4 could be used effectively. I reversed the colours on each sample sock.
This pattern was released to the members of the Three Irish Girls sock Yarnista club in June 2012, and was sold on their site until September 2013. It is now only available from the designer.
Rock the Party Knee Socks by Trisha Paetsch
What Is Being Made
Rock the Party Knee Socks are luxurious and playful adult knee-high socks designed by Trisha Paetsch. These socks are knit from the cuff down and feature customizable sizing and length, making them an excellent project for using yarn scraps from other projects or showcasing multiple favorite colors in a single pair. The finished socks are shown in an adult medium size with a 7-inch foot circumference.
Knitting Techniques
These advanced-level socks employ several key knitting techniques to create their distinctive appearance and structure. The socks are constructed using the cuff-down method, beginning at the top of the leg and working downward toward the foot. The design incorporates colorwork sections using multiple contrast colors throughout the leg and foot, allowing for creative color combinations and pattern variations. The socks feature a customizable construction where both the foot length and leg length can be adjusted by working fewer or more sections of the provided charts, giving knitters flexibility in the final dimensions. The width of the socks can also be modified by adjusting the gauge during knitting.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
Rock the Party Knee Socks utilize fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques common to sock construction. The primary stitches include:
- Knit (K) – the basic knit stitch forming stockinette stitch fabric
- Purl (P) – used for ribbing at the cuff and textural elements
- Knit two together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Purl two together (P2tog) – a decrease worked on purl rows
- Slip, slip, knit (SSK) – a left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
- Slip stitches (Sl1k and Sl1p) – slipping stitches knitwise or purlwise for edge definition and colorwork transitions
The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, with rounds (Rnds) of knitting creating seamless sock construction. Markers are placed (PM) to denote pattern repeats and section boundaries.
Materials and Yarn
Rock the Party Knee Socks are designed to be knit with 4-ply fingering weight yarn, which provides the necessary fineness and durability for sock construction. The sample shown uses 9 colors of Glenhaven Fingering yarn, totaling 172 grams and 654 yards. The colorwork sections utilize 8 semi-solid colors, while the cuff, heel, and toe are worked in 1 handpainted yarn color. However, the pattern is flexible and can be made with as few as 4 colors, making it ideal for stash-busting projects using leftover yarn from other knitting endeavors.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern calls for US 1 (2.25mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches in length, or a size needed to obtain the correct gauge. A second set of needles in sizes US 2 or US 3 (slightly larger) is recommended for working the ribbed cuff, which typically requires smaller needles than the body to maintain elasticity and structure.
The target gauge is 9 stitches and 9 rows per inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct sock dimensions and fit. Since the width can be customized by changing gauge, knitters can adjust needle size to create a larger or smaller sock as needed.
Difficulty Level
Rock the Party Knee Socks are classified as an advanced knitting project. This difficulty level reflects the combination of techniques required, including working in the round on circular needles, executing decreases for shaping, managing multiple colors in colorwork sections, and interpreting chart-based pattern instructions. Knitters should have solid experience with sock construction and colorwork before attempting this design.
