Product Description
The River Idle played an important part in my teenage life; the gentle babbling waters providing a source of solace and calm. The pattern in these socks reminds me of the time I spent on Carr Bridge, watching the River Idle flowing away from me, rippling over the streaming river weed.
River Idle is knitted from the top down, starting with a crochet provisional cast-on and picot edge. The sock is worked with a lace border on the leg. The ripple lace pattern on the instep can also be used as an option to give a longer leg length. Information is included to allow adjustment of the length of the Eye of the Partridge slip-stitch heel flap for a good fit at the heel and in the gusset section.
The sock pattern includes both charts and written instructions for the lace. Instructions for construction, including the picot edge and slip-stitch heel are written.
Foot length adjustable to fit.
River Idle Socks by Karen Butler
What is Being Made
River Idle is an advanced knitting pattern for socks inspired by the designer's personal connection to the River Idle and memories of watching water flow over river weed from Carr Bridge. The pattern features a flowing stitch design that captures the rippling movement of water. These socks are available in multiple sizes to accommodate different wearers, including Toddler, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, and Adult Large, with options for both Short and Long leg lengths.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This sock pattern employs advanced knitting techniques suitable for experienced knitters. The construction involves working with stitch markers to maintain pattern placement and shaping. The foot length is adjustable, allowing knitters to customize the fit for larger shoe sizes, though additional yarn may be required beyond the stated yardage for extended lengths.
Stitches Used
The River Idle pattern utilizes a range of essential knitting stitches to create its flowing water-inspired design:
- Knit (k) – fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (p) – creates texture and pattern variation
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – decreases stitches for shaping
- Purl 2 together (p2tog) – decreases stitches on purl rows
- Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skp) – a left-leaning decrease
- Slip 1 knitwise, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over (sk2p) – a double decrease for more dramatic shaping
- Slip stitch (sl) – moves stitches without working them
- Place marker (pm) and remove marker (rm) – helps track pattern repeats and construction sections
Yarn and Materials
The design is shown knitted in Literally Yarn 'Solar Sock', a high-quality blend composed of 75% merino wool, 20% nylon, and 5% stellina. This yarn weight is classified as 4-ply, providing excellent stitch definition for intricate pattern work. The sample features the colorways Weeping Willow and Aspen. Approximately 400 metres (437 yards) of yarn is required, though the exact yardage needed depends on the selected size and leg length. Knitters working with larger shoe sizes may need additional yardage beyond the standard amount.
Pattern Details
As an advanced-level knitting project, River Idle requires familiarity with sock construction methods, stitch abbreviations, and the ability to work decreases and increases with precision. The pattern provides a comprehensive size table to guide yarn requirements and finished dimensions across all available sizes. The adjustable foot length feature makes this pattern versatile for different foot measurements while maintaining the integrity of the water-inspired stitch pattern.
