RAINBOW MITTENS
Mittens that allow a little one to catch a rainbow in the palm of their hands.
Inspired by some ‘vintage’ Button and Blue mittens from our AW18 collection, Look Up. Inspired by the childlike ability to look up and see the beauty around them that we often miss as busy grown ups, whether it’s a rainbow, the moon in the daytime of a funny shaped cloud!
The Rainbow Mittens are knit seamlessly in the round from the bottom up with just a small seam at the base of the thumb to sew up at the end.
The rainbow is worked using chain stitch embroidery and requires approximately 60” / 152cm per colour. Perfect for stash busting. The pattern contains a link to our video tutorial for chain stitch embroidery on knitting.

What is Being Made
The Rainbow Mittens are a charming knitted accessory designed to delight little ones with a colorful rainbow motif. These mittens come in three sizes—Baby, Toddler, and Child—making them suitable for infants through young children. The design features a whimsical embroidered rainbow on each mitten, creating a playful and imaginative element that encourages children to "catch a rainbow in the palm of their hands."
Knitting Techniques
These mittens are knit seamlessly in the round, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The construction begins with the cuff, which is worked in twisted rib stitch to create a stretchy, textured edge that helps the mittens stay securely on small hands.
The mitten hands are worked in stockinette stitch, the most fundamental knitting stitch, creating a smooth fabric that showcases the yarn's color beautifully. For the two larger sizes (Toddler and Child), the pattern incorporates thumb gusset shaping, a technique that creates a comfortable, well-fitted thumb opening. The thumb stitches are strategically placed on hold while the remainder of the hand is completed, then picked up and finished separately. The Baby size features a thumbless design, simplifying the construction for the smallest wearers.
The final decorative element involves chain stitch embroidery, a hand-embroidery technique used to add the rainbow design to each completed mitten. This adds a personalized, artisanal touch to the finished project.
Stitches Used
- Twisted Rib Stitch (cuff)
- Stockinette Stitch (mitten body)
- Chain Stitch (embroidery)
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Rainbow Mittens pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, specifically The Yarn Collective Hudson Worsted Extra Fine Merino & Yak, which is a premium blend of 85% Wool and 15% Yak fiber. This blend provides warmth, softness, and durability ideal for children's mittens.
Yarn quantities vary by size: the Baby size requires 40g of the main color (Pumpkin 406), the Toddler size requires 45g, and the Child size requires 50g. Additionally, the pattern calls for a very small quantity of 4 ply weight yarn in three complementary colors for the embroidered rainbow detail, allowing crafters to choose colors that coordinate beautifully with their main yarn choice.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Rainbow Mittens are accessible to knitters new to the craft. While the pattern includes seamless in-the-round knitting and basic shaping techniques, these are fundamental skills that beginners can master, making this an excellent introductory project for learning essential mittens-making techniques.
