What is Being Made
The Puppy or Bear Hooded Cowl is a charming crocheted accessory designed by Angela Plunkett of Little Monkeys Designs. This hooded cowl combines a cozy neck covering with an attached hood, creating a whimsical animal-themed design that can be customized as either a puppy or bear. The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different age groups and body types, including 3/6 months, 6/12 months, Toddler, Child, and Adult sizes, making it a versatile project suitable for the entire family.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental and slightly advanced techniques to create its structured hooded shape. The pattern utilizes Foundation Single Crochet (FSC), a technique that combines the chain and single crochet steps into one fluid motion, creating a more stable and elastic foundation row compared to traditional chaining. The cowl construction involves strategic increases and decreases to shape the hood and adjust the fit across different sizes. The pattern demonstrates proper shaping methods essential for creating garments that fit well and maintain their intended silhouette.
Stitches Used
The Puppy or Bear Hooded Cowl incorporates a focused selection of essential crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used for foundation and transitional elements throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – The primary stitch providing a tight, dense fabric suitable for a structured cowl
- Half double crochet (hdc) – Adds slight height and texture variation where needed
- Double crochet (dc) – Creates lighter, more open areas for visual interest
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Decrease stitches (dec, sc2tog) – Essential for shaping the hood and tapering the cowl to fit properly
- Increase stitches (inc) – Allows the fabric to expand where needed for comfortable fit
Materials and Tools
This project calls for worsted weight yarn (weight category 4, classified as Medium), which provides excellent stitch definition and works up at a moderate pace. The sample shown in the pattern was crocheted using Nature's Choice Organic Cotton by Lion Brand Yarn, offering a natural fiber option that breathes well and is gentle on sensitive skin—particularly suitable for children. The toddler size requires approximately 2 balls of yarn, with yardage varying by size.
Essential tools include a size J crochet hook, appropriately sized for worsted weight yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric consistency. A yarn needle is necessary for weaving in ends and potentially seaming pieces together, and stitch markers help track pattern repeats and mark important points during construction, which is especially helpful when working in the round to create the hooded structure.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes the crafter has foundational crochet knowledge including basic stitches and the ability to follow written instructions with abbreviations. The intermediate classification reflects the pattern's use of shaping techniques, size variations, and the structural complexity of creating a fitted hooded garment rather than a simple flat project.
