What you'll need
Product Description
Triangular shawl with asymmetrical shape. Knitted from side to side. Use 2 colors. Choose between 2 sizes; small or large. The difference for the largest size shows up by adding a last Set C only.
Gauge is not critical but the lace pattern in Set C looks best for a fingering type yarn.
Any Fingering yarn can be used. Two colors are needed. It would look nice with one solid color and one gradient or speckled yarn. See material needed below. In my sample I have used Drops Flora which gives a gauge approx. 24 sts and 32 rows per 10x10 cm on needle size 3.5 mm.
Finished measurement with Fingering yarn weight: Size S: approx. 170 cm long and 35 cm width Size L: approx. 205 cm long and 40 cm width
Possibility Shawl by Aud Bergo
What is Being Made
The Possibility Shawl is a triangular knitted shawl with an asymmetrical shape, designed by Aud Bergo. This beginner-friendly knitting project features a two-color colorwork design and offers flexibility with two size options: Small (approximately 170 cm long and 35 cm wide) and Large (approximately 205 cm long and 40 cm wide). The shawl's construction method and color combination possibilities make it an accessible introduction to multi-color shawl knitting.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Possibility Shawl is knitted from side to side, a construction method that builds the triangular shape horizontally rather than from the top down or bottom up. This approach allows knitters to work with two distinct colors throughout the project. The pattern incorporates a lace component, specifically in the final section, which adds visual interest and drape to the finished garment. The side-to-side construction combined with the two-color technique creates the asymmetrical design characteristic of this shawl.
Stitches and Pattern Structure
The Possibility Shawl pattern is organized into three separate sets labeled A, B, and C. The lace pattern appears primarily in Set C, where the distinction between the two size options becomes apparent. Set C is the final section of the pattern, and the sizing difference is achieved through variations in this concluding set only. This modular pattern structure makes the design straightforward for beginner knitters to follow and execute.
Materials and Gauge Information
The Possibility Shawl is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, with the designer recommending a fingering-type yarn for optimal appearance of the lace pattern in Set C. The pattern was tested using Drops Flora yarn on 3.5 mm needles, which produced a gauge of approximately 24 stitches and 32 rows per 10x10 cm.
Yardage Requirements:
- Size Small: Color 1: 65 grams (approximately 455 yards), Color 2: 35 grams (approximately 245 yards)
- Size Large: Color 1: 85 grams (approximately 595 yards), Color 2: 45 grams (approximately 315 yards)
The designer notes that gauge is not critical for this project, though the lace pattern in Set C displays its best appearance when worked with a fingering-weight yarn. This flexibility makes the Possibility Shawl an excellent choice for knitters working with various yarn weights and needle sizes, as long as the final fabric drapes appropriately for a lace shawl.
