Product Description
This shawl is named after a lake my grandparents had a cabin on when I was young. The colors remind me of the lake water and the reeds and grasses that grew in the lake. We did a lot of fishing and swimming in this lake.
This shawl is worked with a variegated fingering weight yarn and a contrasting fingering weight yarn. The colors used for the sample are discontinued colors but any smooth fingering weight yarns will work. Choose two colors (1 skein each) that make you happy!
Gauge is not real critical. Gauge is quoted in unblocked format due to the amount of stretching the knitter will do when blocking.
The pattern is for one size. The nupps are challenging but fun. The wave pattern works up quickly because of dropping the extra wraps and is a lot of fun. The border is worked perpendicular to the shawl and attached to the shawl while it is work.
This pattern has been test knit and tech edited.
Popple Shawl by ElizabethV
What is Being Made
The Popple Shawl is a knitted triangular shawl designed by ElizabethV Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished garment measuring 48 inches by 23½ inches (122cm x 60cm), making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.
Yarn and Materials
This shawl requires two 400-yard hanks of smooth fingering or sock-weight wool yarn in contrasting colorways: one variegated or hand-painted main color (MC) and one semi-solid coordinating color (CC). The sample design features Heritage Paints by Cascade Yarns in a variegated colorway paired with Round Mountain Fibers Entomology Semisolid in a semi-solid base, both yarns composed of merino wool blended with nylon or pure merino wool for durability and softness.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles in a 32-inch length for the main body of the shawl, along with US 4 (3.5mm) double-pointed needles or needles matching your gauge for any necessary sections. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Popple Shawl employs a stripe pattern as its primary design element, created through strategic color changes between the main color and coordinating semi-solid yarn. The pattern incorporates a garter edge to frame the shawl with a textured, finished border. Stitch markers are positioned between pattern repeats to help knitters maintain accuracy throughout the construction process.
Gauge and Pattern Notes
The unblocked gauge for the stripe pattern is 28 stitches and 38 rows over 4 inches (10cm). Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished shawl meets the specified dimensions. The pattern notes indicate that a garter edge is incorporated into the design, providing structure and visual definition to the completed piece.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Popple Shawl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with color changes, pattern repeats, and shaping techniques typical of shawl construction.
