Pop of Neon Hat – Knitting Pattern Summary

The Pop of Neon Hat is a free, downloadable PDF knitting pattern published under the Caron brand. Designed to fit an average woman's head in one universal size, this intermediate-level knitted hat combines a sophisticated heathered base with a bold neon accent, making it a striking accessory that is both modern and technically rewarding to knit.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a single knitted hat worked entirely in the round. The finished piece features a textured decorative band known as a Latvian Braid, a smoothly shaped crown with classic decrease rounds, and a generous hand-wrapped pompom in the neon contrast color attached at the top. The design is sized to fit an average woman's head and is knitted at a worsted weight gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Techniques Used

  • Knitting in the round – The hat is worked entirely in circular rounds from cast-on to crown, using both a circular needle and, as the stitch count decreases, a set of four double-pointed needles.
  • Latvian Braid – A traditional stranded colorwork technique worked over three rounds. In the first round, stitches alternate between the two yarn colors. In the second and third rounds, both yarns are held at the front of the work and purled in alternating colors, with the yarns deliberately wrapped under or over each other in opposite directions on consecutive rounds to create a twisted, rope-like decorative band. This is a classic technique from Baltic knitting traditions and adds a visually distinctive stripe to the hat.
  • Two-strand casting on and ribbing – The brim is begun by holding two strands of the main color together on a smaller circular needle, creating a denser, more elastic foundation.
  • Seed-stitch-style brim – The brim is worked by alternating knit and purl rounds, producing a subtle textured edge before transitioning to the body of the hat.
  • Crown shaping with paired decreases – The top of the hat is shaped through a series of decrease rounds using the K2tog (knit two together) decrease, systematically reducing the stitch count from 88 stitches down to just 8, which are then drawn together and fastened off.
  • Pompom making – A large pompom is hand-wrapped by winding the contrast yarn approximately 90 times around four fingers, tying it tightly at the center, cutting through the loops, and trimming to a smooth, round shape before sewing it to the crown.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K) – Used throughout the body of the hat in stockinette rounds.
  • Purl stitch (P) – Used in the brim section and throughout the Latvian Braid rounds.
  • K2tog (Knit Two Together) – The primary decrease stitch used to shape the crown across nine decrease rounds, reducing stitches in a regular, evenly spaced pattern.
  • Stockinette stitch in the round – The main body of the hat is worked in continuous knit rounds, which naturally produce stockinette fabric when knitting circularly.

Crown Decrease Sequence

The crown shaping is worked methodically across alternating rounds, with plain knit rounds between each decrease round. The decrease rounds progress as follows: K9, K2tog reducing to 80 stitches; then K8, K2tog to 72; K7, K2tog to 64; K6, K2tog to 56; K5, K2tog to 48; K4, K2tog to 40; K3, K2tog to 32; K2, K2tog to 24; K1, K2tog to 16; and finally K2tog around to 8 stitches. This graduated approach creates a smooth, professional-looking crown without puckering.
