Product Description
For these projects you will need 3 colours of yarn for each pot holder. I used Bernat Handicrafter yarn. These patterns are available for FREE on my blog, or here as a printable PDF collection.
MATERIALS: • Bernat Handicrafter Yarn, uses less than 1 small ball of each colour. o Teal: A - Off White, B - Teal, Classic Navy o Pink: A - Hot Pink, B - Coral Rose, C - Off White o Yellow: A - Pale Yellow, B - Off White, C - Lemon Swirl (just the dark yellow part of the mixture) • Size 5.5mm crochet hook
DIMENSIONS: 8x8”
NOTES: • You work with 2 colours in each row. You will carry over the colour you aren’t working with. • You can carry your yarn up the sides instead of cutting and fastening between rows; it will all be woven in with the border at the end. • Each pot holder square is made twice to ensure a nice thick, plush pot holder is created when the two squares are joined at the end.
Plaid Pot Holder Crochet Collection by Callista Faye
Project Overview
The Plaid Pot Holder Crochet Collection is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern set designed to create functional kitchen accessories with classic plaid colorwork. Each pot holder measures approximately 8x8 inches, making them ideal for protecting hands and surfaces from hot cookware while adding decorative flair to any kitchen.
What Is Being Made
This collection consists of crochet pot holders featuring traditional plaid patterns. The finished pieces are practical kitchen textiles suitable for everyday use, with dimensions of approximately 8 inches by 8 inches. The plaid design is achieved through multi-color crochet techniques, creating visually striking geometric patterns.
Crochet Techniques Used
The patterns employ tapestry crochet techniques, which involve working with multiple colors within the same row. Key technical elements include:
- Color carrying: You will carry the unused color along the edge of your work as you crochet, incorporating it into your stitches rather than cutting and fastening yarn between color changes
- Color changes: When switching colors, you pull through a loop of the next color to finish the last stitch of the active color, creating seamless transitions
- Yarn management: Keeping one color to the front of your work and one to the back prevents tangling and maintains consistent tension throughout the piece
- Border finishing: Carried yarn is woven in during the border work at the end, eliminating the need for extensive weaving in of ends
Stitches Used
This beginner-level collection uses two fundamental crochet stitches in US terminology:
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch used throughout the pot holders, providing a medium-height, dense fabric suitable for kitchen use
- Slip Stitch (SL ST): Used for joining rounds and creating borders
Materials Required
To complete these projects, you will need worsted weight yarn in three colors to create the plaid patterns. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in any remaining yarn ends and finishing details. The patterns note that gauge is not critical as long as your tension remains consistent throughout the project. A steamer is optional but may be used to finish and block the completed pot holders for a polished appearance.
Skill Level and Notes
Designed for beginners, these patterns are accessible to crocheters new to tapestry crochet and color work. The instructions emphasize maintaining consistent tension and proper yarn management techniques. The pattern provides detailed guidance on color changes and yarn carrying to help you achieve professional-looking plaid patterns without complicated techniques.
