Product Description
Details: Pigdale (named for the yarn colors: Pigtown and Scottdale) is a fun, striped hat with a textured panel for a little something extra. To prevent a bunch of ends to weave in later the stripes are narrow enough to carry yarns up the side of the hat. I located the textured panel at the start of the round so that any jogging of stripes would be hidden. This hat is sized for the whole family with the smallest size being suitable for a child and the largest fitting an XL adult (or big hair). All hats are the same length giving it a stocking cap look when knit in the kids size. Because so little yarn is used, just ~1.5 to ~3 oz of each color, this would be a great stash buster project.
Fit: This pattern is designed to be worn with 1-2 inches of negative ease. So the largest size should fit a head circumference of up to 26 inches. Sample is worn with 2 inches of negative ease.
Size: Finished measurements are 16”, 18”, 20”, 22”, and 24” circumference and 9.5” tall.
Pigdale Knit Hat by Fatimah Hinds
What is Being Made
Pigdale is a downloadable knitting pattern for a fitted, round hat available in five sizes ranging from 16 inches to 24 inches in circumference. The hat features a 9.5-inch height and is designed to be worn with 2 inches of negative ease for a snug fit. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a classic hat silhouette suitable for a range of head sizes.
Techniques Used
The Pigdale pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create visual interest and minimize finishing work. Stranded colorwork is used throughout, with colors carried up the side of the hat to reduce the number of yarn ends requiring weaving in after completion. A moss stitch panel is worked at the start of each round to camouflage any jogging that may occur when changing between colors. The hat is constructed in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric. Crown decreases are worked to shape the top of the hat, and the pattern notes that the height is easily adjustable by beginning these decreases 1.5 inches before your desired finished length.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch used throughout the hat body, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Moss stitch – a textured panel worked at the start of each round to disguise color changes
- Decreases – used in the crown shaping to taper the hat to a closed point
Materials
Yarn: The pattern calls for Neighborhood Fiber Co Studio Sock, a 100% superwash merino yarn with 400 yards per 4 ounces. The sample uses one ball each of the colors Pigtown (Color 1) and Scottdale (Color 2), or a total of 3 ounces of any sock weight yarn (1.5 ounces per color). This 4-ply yarn weight provides excellent stitch definition for the colorwork and moss stitch details.
Needles: US 4/3.5mm circular needles measuring 16 inches in length, along with matching double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases.
Notions: Two stitch markers are required to track the beginning of rounds and other pattern sections.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 25 stitches by 35 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Cast-on counts vary by size: 108 stitches for the smallest size (16"), 120 stitches for size 18", 132 stitches for size 20", 144 stitches for size 22", and 156 stitches for the largest size (24"). This gauge and sizing information ensures proper fit across all available sizes.
