Project Overview
The PEEP Hole Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Laura Rasmussen. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a triangular shawl with a longest edge measuring approximately 86 inches, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or wrapping. The design features decorative eyelet details created through strategic yarn overs and decreases, giving the shawl its distinctive "peep hole" aesthetic.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a large triangular shawl with openwork details. The generous 86-inch longest edge makes it an ideal project for knitters seeking a substantial finished piece that can be worn as a wrap, shawlette, or decorative accessory. The shawl's construction and sizing make it suitable for various styling options and occasions.
Techniques Used
The PEEP Hole Shawl employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques that build skills progressively throughout the project:
- Yarn overs (YO): Used to create the openwork eyelet details that define the shawl's visual character. Yarn overs are fundamental to lace knitting and add both texture and visual interest to the finished piece.
- Drop yarn overs: A deliberate technique where yarn overs from the previous row are dropped, creating intentional holes and contributing to the shawl's lacy appearance.
- Decreases: Both knit decreases (K2tog and SSK) and purl decreases (P2tog and P2togtbl) are used to shape the shawl and balance the increases created by yarn overs, maintaining proper stitch counts and creating the triangular silhouette.
- Increases: The KFB (knit front and back) and KFBF (knit front, back, and front) increases add stitches strategically to expand the shawl as it grows from the top down or bottom up.
- Circular needle knitting: The pattern uses a 32-inch circular needle, allowing the knitter to work in the round or back and forth depending on the construction method, providing flexibility and comfort during the extended knitting process.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes a focused selection of stitches appropriate for intermediate knitters:
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the shawl, creating a smooth, classic fabric base that showcases the openwork details.
- Knit stitches (K): The foundation stitch worked on right-side rows.
- Purl stitches (P): Worked on wrong-side rows to create stockinette stitch when alternated with knit rows.
- Yarn overs and decreases: Combined to create the lace pattern and eyelet holes that give the shawl its distinctive appearance and name.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Requirements: The shawl requires 375 yards of fingering weight yarn for the main color (MC), plus small quantities of contrasting colors. The pattern specifies Knitted Wit Gumballs for the contrast colors (CC1 through CC6), using 13 grams and 45 yards per contrast color. The designer's sample used six specific colorways: Guy Noir, Oregon Sky, Grey Wolf, Silver Lining, Ghostly, and Naked, listed from darkest to lightest. This creates a gradient effect through the shawl.
Needles: US 6 (4.0mm) 32-inch circular needle is required for this project. The circular needle accommodates the growing width of the triangular shawl comfortably.
Additional Supplies: A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends after completion.
Gauge: The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch using US 6 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the shawl.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the PEEP Hole Shawl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace techniques. The combination of yarn overs, multiple decrease methods, and strategic increases requires attention to pattern reading and stitch manipulation, making it an excellent project for building confidence with openwork knitting.
