PAULINE Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

Project Overview

The PAULINE baby blanket is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Susan J Ward. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished square blanket measuring approximately 36 x 36 inches (92 x 92 centimeters), making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a decorative baby blanket featuring a textured center panel with an elegant border construction. The blanket is constructed by first knitting a square central section, then picking up stitches along the edges to create additional border sections that expand the overall dimensions of the finished piece.

Knitting Techniques Used

The PAULINE blanket employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and texture to the finished piece:

  • Yarn over increases for creating decorative lace-like elements throughout the pattern
  • Slip-slip-knit (SSK) decreases worked in combination with yarn overs to form symmetrical stitch patterns
  • Knit-together (K2tog) decreases for shaping and pattern definition
  • Picking up stitches along finished edges to add border sections
  • Working both right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) rows with coordinating stitch patterns
  • Yarn round needle (Yrn) techniques at the beginning of rows for edge definition

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern uses a repeating 10-row stitch sequence that alternates between textured knit and purl rows and decorative lace pattern rows. The core stitches employed include:

  • Knit stitch (K) – the foundational stitch used throughout
  • Purl stitch (P) – creates texture and visual contrast
  • Yarn over (YO) – creates decorative holes and increases
  • Knit two together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
  • Slip-slip-knit (SSK) – a left-leaning decrease that pairs with yarn overs for balanced lace elements
  • Slip stitch (Sl1) – used in border sections for neat edge finishing

The pattern repeats these stitches in groups of six across the cast-on stitches, creating a symmetrical design. The border sections use simpler stitch patterns of knit and purl combinations, allowing the texture to build gradually as stitches are increased through yarn round needle techniques.

Materials Required

The PAULINE blanket pattern calls for double knit (DK) weight yarn, which is a lightweight yet durable choice for baby blankets. The designer specifies approximately 350 grams of yarn, with the example project using Woolcraft Baby Pebble in shade F-105. A single pair of 5mm knitting needles is required to complete the entire project.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with lace techniques, decreases, and the more complex construction method of picking up stitches for border sections.
