What is Being Made

The Patchwork Shawl is a knitted triangular shawl inspired by traditional patchwork blankets composed of hundreds of small fabric patches. This design translates that aesthetic into knitting through a series of geometric squares and rectangles of varying sizes, some featuring delicate floral motifs. The shawl is available in three sizes—small, medium, and large—allowing knitters to customize the finished dimensions to their preference.

Construction Method

This shawl uses a top-down construction technique, beginning with a garter tab cast-on at the apex. The garter tab is created by casting on 3 stitches and knitting 7 rows, then turning the work to pick up stitches along the side edge. This creates a reinforced, decorative starting point. From this foundation, knitters follow a series of charted patterns that build outward and downward to create the triangular shawl shape. The construction is straightforward once the initial garter tab is established—knitters simply follow the provided charts in sequence.

The pattern offers three size options with different chart combinations. The small size uses charts A, B, and C; the medium size uses charts A, B, D, and E; and the large size uses charts A, B, D, F, and G. This modular approach allows knitters to customize their finished shawl while maintaining the same foundational construction method.

While gauge is noted as less critical for shawl projects—since shawls are flexible garments that can accommodate minor gauge variations—accurate gauge will directly affect yarn consumption. Knitters should swatch if they plan to work a size other than the small, or if substituting yarn. The small size shawl blocks to approximately 150 cm wide and 85 cm high, creating a substantial triangular wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory.
