*Creating a nice edge which makes joining the strips easier:

On the RS I always slip the first stitch of the row as if to purl (with the yarn in the front). On the WS I always knit the last stitch. This creates a nice selvedge st which makes it much easier to pick up stitches for joining.

What is Being Made

The Patches Baby Sweater is a charming knitted cardigan designed for newborns and infants, available in two sizes: Newborn to 3 months and 6 months to 12 months. This cardigan features a distinctive patchwork aesthetic created through a unique construction method that joins knitted strips together as the garment is worked, resulting in a visually striking finished piece that celebrates color and pattern variation.

Construction Method and Techniques

This cardigan employs an innovative strip-based construction technique that sets it apart from traditional garment knitting. Rather than knitting the entire piece as one unit, the Patches Baby Sweater is constructed by knitting individual vertical strips that are joined together progressively during the knitting process. This approach not only creates the signature patchwork appearance but also makes the project more manageable and portable for knitters working on a baby garment.

The primary technique used throughout this project is knitting strips together on the right side, which allows each new strip to be seamlessly integrated with the previously completed strips. This join-as-you-go method eliminates the need for seaming after completion, streamlining the finishing process.

An essential foundational technique employed in this pattern is slipping the first stitch of each row as if to purl. This edge treatment creates a neat, finished appearance along the selvage edges of each strip, improving the overall aesthetics of both the individual strips and the final joined garment.

Stitches Used

The Patches Baby Sweater utilizes two primary knitting stitches to create its structure and visual interest:

  • Garter stitch — used for the opening rows of each strip (6 rows, creating 3 ridges), this stitch provides a textured, reversible fabric that works beautifully as a border element and helps define the transition between strips
  • Stockinette stitch — the main stitch used for the body of each strip after the initial garter stitch section, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric that showcases the self-patterning yarn to its fullest potential

Materials and Yarn

This pattern is designed to work with fingering weight self-patterning yarn, with yardage requirements of 440 yards for the Newborn to 3 months size and 560 yards for the 6 months to 12 months size. The pattern specifically recommends yarns like Opal Hundertwasser or similar sock yarns that feature built-in color changes and pattern sequences. The self-patterning nature of these yarns is essential to achieving the unique patchwork aesthetic; as the yarn's colors change naturally during knitting, each strip develops its own distinct appearance, and when joined together, these variations create a cohesive yet visually dynamic finished garment.

Knitting needles in US size 1 (2.25 mm) are required for this project, appropriate for working with fingering weight yarn and achieving the specified gauge.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches and 10 rows equals 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is important for ensuring the cardigan fits properly within the intended size range. The pattern provides two distinct sizes with corresponding stitch counts: the Newborn to 3 months size uses 17 stitches per strip, while the 6 months to 12 months size uses 21 stitches per strip.

Finishing Details

The completed cardigan is finished with 3 buttons, which are added to create a functional closure for this baby cardigan. The pattern instructs knitters to bind off all strips loosely, ensuring a flexible edge that will not pucker or create an overly tight neckline or armhole opening.

Skill Level

Classified as a beginner-level project, the Patches Baby Sweater is an excellent introduction to garment knitting for those new to the craft. The straightforward stitch repertoire, manageable strip-based construction, and small finished size make this an approachable project that builds fundamental knitting skills while producing an adorable, wearable result.
