Product Description

This is the pattern for you to crochet your own starry blanket. It's a lockdown special as it's designed to be easy, and as endless (cos who knows how long we'll be at home for!) I've chosen the colours by finding treasures on my 'daily exercise' walk and from around the house and my plan is to find a new colour each day and then make a star. It takes me roughly a movie to make one star so is ideal.

I also have no idea how I'm going to finish the edges or anything at the moment but I figure we can work that out together :) You'll need to make basic plain hexagons and stars.

You can use any weight yarn that you like.

Parrot & Pear Blossom Star Blanket by Steel&Stitch

Project Overview

The Parrot & Pear Blossom Star Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket pattern designed by Steel&Stitch as a free downloadable PDF. This creative project invites crafters to build an expandable, modular blanket composed of individual crocheted stars and hexagons. The design philosophy emphasizes flexibility and gradual progress, making it ideal for crafters seeking a relaxing, ongoing project that can grow at their own pace. Each star motif takes approximately one movie-length viewing to complete, offering a satisfying sense of accomplishment in short crafting sessions.

Design Concept & Customization

This blanket pattern encourages creative color selection through everyday inspiration. The designer suggests incorporating new yarn colors discovered during daily activities and sourced from around the home, with the intention of creating one new star per day using a different hue. This approach transforms the blanket into a personalized, evolving textile that reflects the maker's daily life and discoveries. The modular nature of the project means the blanket can expand indefinitely, making it adaptable to any desired finished size without requiring extensive pattern modifications.

Crochet Techniques & Construction

The Parrot & Pear Blossom Star Blanket employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern focuses on two primary motifs: basic plain hexagons and stars, both constructed using straightforward stitching methods. These modular pieces are then joined together to form the complete blanket. The repetitive nature of creating individual motifs makes this pattern accessible to newer crocheters while still producing a visually striking finished piece.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch): The foundation stitch used to begin motifs and create stitch spaces
  • Slip Stitch (Ss): Used to join rounds and connect motifs seamlessly
  • Double Crochet (Dc): Listed as UK double crochet, equivalent to US single crochet; a fundamental stitch for structure
  • Treble (Tr): UK treble, equivalent to US double crochet; creates taller stitches for texture and drape
  • Dc2tog (Double Crochet 2 Together): UK double crochet decrease, equivalent to US single crochet 2 together; used for shaping motifs
  • Tr2tog (Treble 2 Together): UK treble decrease, equivalent to US double crochet 2 together; another shaping technique for refining motif edges

Materials Required

Crafters will need Aran weight yarn in multiple colors to complete this project. The pattern specifies two yarn designations: Yarn A for the star motifs and Yarn B for the joining hexagons, allowing for color contrast or coordination depending on personal preference. A 5mm crochet hook is the appropriate tool size for working with Aran yarn, ensuring proper stitch definition and fabric drape.

Hexagon Construction

The hexagon motifs serve as joining pieces between the stars. Each hexagon begins with a chain-4 foundation joined into a loop using a slip stitch. Round 1 establishes the hexagon's six-sided structure through a combination of treble stitches and chain spaces, creating an open, geometric foundation. The pattern notation indicates multiple repeats of the stitch sequence to build the characteristic hexagon shape.

Pattern Flexibility & Finishing

The designer acknowledges that edge finishing techniques remain open-ended, inviting crafters to collaborate on determining the best approach for their individual blankets. This flexibility encourages creative problem-solving and allows makers to adapt the blanket's edges according to their preferences or available materials. The modular design means that edge finishing can be determined once the desired blanket size is achieved.
