Overlander Shawl by Cozy Up Knits

Project Overview

The Overlander is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl pattern designed by Cozy Up Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile wrap suitable for various skill levels, making it an excellent introduction to shawl construction for newer knitters.

What Is Being Made

The Overlander is a knitted shawl worked from a center point outward. The pattern accommodates customization through color work options, allowing knitters to create either a single-color design or a multi-colored version using up to five contrasting colors. The finished shawl measures approximately 36-40 inches when blocked, providing generous coverage as a shoulder wrap or decorative accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. Key techniques include:

  • Increases: The pattern features two primary increase methods—the Garter Repeat with 3-stitch increases and the Burlap Stitch Repeat with 6-stitch increases. These increases are strategically placed to create the shawl's expanding triangular or crescent shape.
  • Slip stitches: Multiple slip stitch variations are used throughout, including slip stitches with yarn in back (sl1wyib) and slip stitches with yarn in front (sl1wyif), which create texture and edge definition.
  • Decrease techniques: Standard decreases such as knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) are incorporated to shape the garment.
  • I-cord edging: A 3-stitch i-cord provides a finished, professional edge to the completed shawl.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Overlander utilizes basic knitting stitches combined into two distinct repeating stitch patterns:

  • Garter Stitch: Formed by knitting every row, garter stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. This foundational stitch provides structure and is ideal for beginners.
  • Garter Repeat Pattern: This 3-stitch increase repeat incorporates knit stitches with strategic increases (kfb—knit front and back) to expand the shawl while maintaining garter texture.
  • Burlap Stitch Repeat Pattern: A 6-stitch increase repeat combining knit stitches with slip stitches (k1, sl1wyib) to create visual interest and texture variation. This pattern provides a larger increase rate for faster shawl growth.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Overlander pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, which is a fine yarn suitable for creating delicate, drape-friendly fabric:

  • Main Color (MC): Approximately 115 grams or 430 yards of fingering weight yarn in 100% Superwash Merino. Superwash treatment makes the yarn machine-washable, adding practicality to the finished shawl.
  • Contrasting Colors (CC): Knitters may choose between two options: approximately 85 yards (20 grams) each of five different contrasting colors for a multi-colored design, or approximately 430 yards of a single contrasting color for a two-tone shawl.
  • Needles: US Size 5 (3.75 mm) needles with a 36-40 inch circular cord accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands from the center outward.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a garter stitch gauge of 23 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches when worked in fingering weight yarn on US Size 5 needles. Achieving proper gauge ensures the finished shawl reaches the intended dimensions and drapes correctly. The circular needle length accommodates the shawl's growth as stitches accumulate through the increase rounds.

Skill Level and Accessibility

Rated as a beginner pattern, the Overlander introduces knitters to shawl construction without requiring advanced techniques. The combination of garter stitch, basic increases, and simple slip stitches makes this pattern accessible to those new to shawlette designs while remaining engaging for more experienced knitters seeking a straightforward project.
