Product Description
Do you see holes between two twisting ribbons? What colour are the holes? Or are there three ribbons?
Intertwining columns of hexagons create this interesting optical illusion afghan. Depending on the colours chose, you may see different effects.
The garter stitch shapes are very simple to make and join together, in any yarn of your choice. The original afghan is just over a metre square but you can go on adding more shapes until you have the size you want ... or run out of yarn.
As with most of Woolly Thoughts patterns, the booklet comes with a colouring sheet so you can try out your own colour combinations. It also shows several alternative designs to make with the same shapes.
Over and Out Afghan by Woolly Thoughts
What is Being Made
Over and Out is a knitted afghan blanket or throw designed by Pat Ashforth and Steve Plummer of Woolly Thoughts. This is a hexagon tessellation project that creates an interlocking geometric pattern across the finished piece. The original design measures approximately 1 metre (40 inches) square, though the pattern allows crafters to customize the final size according to their preferences.
Design and Mathematics
The afghan features a tessellation pattern based on hexagons—six-sided geometric shapes. The hexagons used in this design are semi-regular, meaning they have six equal sides of matching length. Each hexagon possesses a special mathematical property: the narrowest width of the shape equals the length of its sides. Structurally, each hexagon consists of a central square with an equilateral triangle attached to each end. The angles within the hexagons are precisely calculated, with specific angles of 60 degrees and 150 degrees creating the geometric accuracy necessary for the tessellation to fit together seamlessly.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This is a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to newer crafters while offering mathematical interest. The pattern employs straightforward knitting techniques to construct the hexagonal shapes that interlock to form the complete afghan. The tessellation method allows individual hexagon units to be created and then joined together, which is a common approach in modular knitting projects.
Materials
The original Over and Out afghan was created using Double Knitting yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for displaying the geometric pattern. However, the pattern notes that any yarn weight could be substituted, allowing crafters flexibility in material selection. Knitting needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight will be required to complete the project.
