Product Description
Construction
The socks are worked top-down from cuff to toe. The additional stitches for the calf are decreased along the leg. These socks are knitted in a rough style, the strands carried quite wildly on the wrong side of the work, so they show through the sts on the front. For these socks, I used the shadow-wrap heel technique. This specifique technique is not explained in the pattern, so if you are not familiar with it, you can find some youtube videos online. It is also perfectly possible to use your own preferred short-row heel technique. Both socks begin with 1x1 ribbing for the cuff, followed by working the chart as mentioned.
One Way or Another (Punk) Socks by Butzeria
Project Overview
One Way or Another is an advanced knitting pattern for punk-inspired socks designed by independent designer Butzeria. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a pair of socks with asymmetrical leg lengths, featuring a distinctive punk aesthetic through contrasting colorwork. The design is suitable for experienced knitters looking for an intermediate to advanced challenge.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a complete pair of socks with intentional design asymmetry. The socks feature different leg lengths on the left and right foot, creating an edgy, unconventional look that aligns with punk styling. Each sock includes a fitted cuff, leg section, heel, foot, and toe, all constructed as a single continuous knitted piece using the top-down method.
Sizing and Fit
The pattern is available in three sizes to accommodate a range of foot dimensions:
- Size EU 36/37 (US 6/6.5): Cuff circumference 21.0 cm, foot circumference 16.0 cm, foot length 23.5 cm, with right leg 41.5 cm and left leg 39.0 cm
- Size EU 38/39 (US 7.5/8.5): Cuff circumference 21.0 cm, foot circumference 16.0 cm, foot length 25.0 cm, with right leg 41.5 cm and left leg 39.0 cm
- Size EU 40/41 (US 9/10): Cuff circumference 22.0 cm, foot circumference 17.0 cm, foot length 26.5 cm, with right leg 41.5 cm and left leg 39.0 cm
The cuff measurements are given with slight stretch applied, ensuring a secure fit around the ankle while maintaining comfort during wear.
Yarn Requirements and Materials
This pattern uses a two-color knitting technique with a main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC). Yarn quantities vary by size:
- Size EU 36/37: 267 meters (291 yards) MC, 232 meters (253 yards) CC
- Size EU 38/39: 272 meters (297 yards) MC, 236 meters (258 yards) CC
- Size EU 40/41: 292 meters (318 yards) MC, 253 meters (277 yards) CC
The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Kokon Bleu, a 100% Argentinian Merino yarn in fingering weight (400 meters per 100 grams). The colors used were Speckle for the main color and a contrasting shade for the secondary color. Fingering weight yarn is the recommended yarn weight for this pattern, allowing for the precise stitch definition necessary to showcase the colorwork design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
One Way or Another employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that require solid foundational skills:
- Two-Color Colorwork: The pattern incorporates stranded colorwork, a technique where two yarn colors are carried across the row to create a patterned design. This method requires managing tension across both yarns to prevent loose floats or puckering.
- Top-Down Construction: The socks are knitted from the cuff downward toward the toe, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the sock as it progresses.
- Circular Knitting: The pattern utilizes circular needles or double-pointed needles to create seamless, tubular fabric in the round, which is the standard method for sock construction.
- Heel and Toe Shaping: The pattern includes structured heel and toe sections that require decreasing stitches to create a properly fitted foot.
- Asymmetrical Leg Design: The defining feature involves knitting one leg to 41.5 cm while the other leg measures 39.0 cm, creating the punk aesthetic through intentional length variation.
Skill Level and Difficulty
While the product attributes list this as intermediate difficulty, the pattern itself is marked as advanced. This pattern is best suited for knitters who have completed several sock projects and are comfortable with two-color stranded knitting, managing multiple stitches on circular needles, and executing heel and toe decreases with precision.
