Product Description
This must be the quickest cowl pattern ever. Worked solely in trebles this can be made in under an hour and it just uses one skein of Mrs Moon's Podgy. Perfect for a last- minute present or if the weather takes a sudden turn for the for the worst!
I crochet quite loosley, if you find a 15mm too tight you should try a 20mm hook.
Podgy is made from the highest quality, ethically sourced superfine merino and baby alpaca and is very soft and warm. It is a 'super' super chunky and the pattern will not work properly with a standard super chunky.
One Skein Crochet Cowl by Mrs Moon
What is Being Made
The One Skein Cowl is a quick and practical crochet neck accessory designed for rapid completion. This cowl pattern can be finished in under an hour, making it ideal for last-minute gifts or when weather suddenly turns cold. The design is worked in the round to create a seamless, tubular cowl that slips easily over the head.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters new to the craft. The cowl is constructed using simple circular crochet methods, working continuously in rounds without turning. The pattern incorporates basic stitch manipulation, including decreases worked as treble clusters to shape the fabric and ensure proper fit around the neck.
Stitches Used
- Treble (tr): The primary stitch throughout the entire pattern, providing height and drape
- Chain (ch): Used to create the foundation ring and turning chains at the beginning of each round
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Treble two together (tr2tog): A decrease stitch worked over two consecutive stitches to shape the cowl
Materials and Tools
The One Skein Cowl requires minimal materials, living up to its name. You will need one skein of Podgy yarn in a super chunky weight (shown in the Pavlova colorway). For the crochet hook, a 15mm size is recommended for standard tension, though a 20mm hook is suggested for those who crochet more loosely. The super chunky yarn weight combined with a large hook size contributes to the pattern's quick completion time.
Pattern Structure
The cowl begins with a chain foundation of 32 stitches joined into a ring. The pattern is then worked in consecutive rounds, with each round beginning with a chain-3 that counts as the first treble. The shaping occurs through strategic decreases placed at specific intervals to contour the cowl for comfortable neck wear. The pattern is worked continuously without turning between rounds, maintaining a consistent fabric appearance throughout.
