Product Description
One Scotch is my version of the basic ribbed cap. It's easy to modify for size, stripes or whatever yarn you have on hand. I played with the ribbing just a bit, and added a bunched crown, but the best part about making these is matching your colors. A great way to use up leftovers, these hats just fly off the needles! Knit in cashmere and wool, it's a luxurious hat, but manly colors keep it rustic enough for plaid flannels and Timberland boots. Or choose brighter colours for a more feminine look. Sizes given are will fit a child, teenager, or adult. The finished hat is shown in Plucky Knitter, Bello Worsted in Single Malt with Free Skate and Belgian Wit stripes and in Jack of all Trades with Flannel stripes. Alternative yarns are suggested, just 10 yards is needed for each stripe, check out your stash! Always match your gauge especially if you are substituting yarn.
One Scotch Knit Hat by BabyCocktails
What is Being Made
One Scotch is a knitted hat designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. This is a beginner-friendly knit hat project available as a downloadable PDF pattern. The hat features a classic construction with a ribbed body and crown shaping, offered in four different finished circumference sizes to accommodate various head measurements.
Sizes and Finished Measurements
The pattern is available in four sizes with the following finished circumference measurements when laid flat: 14"/35.5cm, 16"/40.5cm, 18.5"/47cm, and 20"/50.75cm. The hat stretches easily 1-2"/2.5-5cm beyond these measurements, making it adaptable to larger heads. The depth from cast-on edge to crown measures 8.5(9, 9.5, 9.5)"/21.5(22.75, 24.25, 24.25)cm depending on size.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
One Scotch employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The hat is constructed using twisted rib on the body worked on larger needles, which creates an elastic, textured fabric that hugs the head comfortably. The crown is worked in 2x2 rib on smaller needles, providing a neat, fitted finish at the top of the hat. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles for the body and double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the crown shaping.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted, a luxury yarn blend composed of 75% merino, 25% cashmere, and 5% nylon. Each skein provides 200 yards/183 meters and weighs 115 grams/4 ounces. Yardage requirements are 150(160, 175) yards/137(146, 160) meters of the main color, plus 5-10 yards/4-9 meters each of varied stripe colors, or approximately 50 yards/45 meters of accent color if working multiple stripes in a single accent shade.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires US #6/4mm and US #5/3.75mm circular needles measuring 16"/40.5cm, with larger-size DPNs for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends and a stitch marker for tracking rounds.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 30 rounds per 4"/10 centimeters when working twisted rib on the larger needles for the body of the hat, and 2x2 rib on the smaller needles for the crown.
Color Variations
One Scotch is shown in two distinct colorway combinations: Jack of All Trades with Flannel stripes, and Single Malt with Free Skate and Belgian Wit stripes. The pattern notes that these are vintage colorways that may no longer be available from the yarn manufacturer, allowing knitters to substitute their preferred colors while following the striping structure.
