Product Description
This little jacket is knit in one piece. It is knit from the bottom up and finishes at the cuffs. This means that the sleeve length can be adjusted.
Although this jacket goes up to three years, a larger size could be achieved by lengthening the sleeves on the 2-3 years. This would make a “cropped” jacket for an older child, as the body has quite a generous width.
Actual measurements.
Size- 3-6 months 12-18 months 2-3 years
Chest - 20ins/50cm 24ins/60cm 28ins/70cm
Sleeve - 8ins/20cm 10ins/25cm 12ins/30cm
Yarn - 300g of Cotton Double Knit. The larger size may use more if knitted in stripes. The smaller size may use less if knitted plain. Smaller quantities are required if using acrylic DK or similar yarn as they are not as heavy as cotton.
There is minimal making up, as only the top edges of the sleeves require sewing. The sleeves could also be easily adapted to knit in the round.
This jacket uses mitered decreases. I have done the maths for you.

One Piece Baby Jacket by JaneTerzzaDesigns
What is Being Made
The One Piece Baby Jacket is a knitted baby garment designed for infants and toddlers in three size options: 6 months, 12-18 months, and 2-3 years. This jacket is constructed as a single integrated piece rather than separate components, eliminating the need for extensive seaming and assembly. The design knits from the bottom edge upward, finishing at the cuffs, which allows for easy customization of sleeve length during the knitting process.
Construction Method and Techniques
This jacket employs mitred or domino knitting techniques to create shaping as the garment is constructed. The one-piece construction method significantly reduces finishing work, with only the top edges of the sleeves requiring sewing upon completion. By knitting from the bottom up, the maker gains flexibility to adjust sleeve length to fit individual needs before binding off at the cuffs. This approach minimizes the making-up process while creating a well-fitted garment.
Stitches and Abbreviations Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques, including:
- k (knit stitch)
- p (purl stitch)
- SL1 (slip one stitch)
- psso (pass slipped stitch over)
- yo (yarn over)
- K2tog (knit two stitches together)
- P3tog (purl three stitches together)
The pattern maintains a tension of 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 centimeters) and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters).
Materials and Specifications
This project requires 3 x 100g balls of cotton double knit yarn in DK weight. Larger sizes may require more than 300 grams of yarn, particularly if knitted with stripe patterns. Smaller sizes will use less yarn when knitted in solid colors. The pattern calls for 4mm circular needles measuring 80 centimeters in length, along with 3 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction. The cotton yarn selection provides breathability and comfort suitable for baby garments.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction techniques such as mitred knitting and one-piece garment assembly.
