Product Description
I wanted to be more environmentally friendly, so decided to make a reusable coffee cup sleeve to keep in my bag for trips out. I tried a few patterns from magazines, but didn't like them, so wrote my own!
On-the-go Coffee Cup Sleeve by Eloelai
What is Being Made
The On-the-go Coffee Cup Sleeve is a practical, portable crocheted accessory designed to provide insulation and protection for hot beverages while you're traveling or commuting. This reusable sleeve offers an eco-friendly alternative to disposable paper and cardboard cup sleeves provided by cafes. The sleeve is compact enough to store in a bag or pocket, making it convenient to pull out whenever you need it for a hot coffee or tea. By using your own cup sleeve, you reduce waste since cardboard sleeves are often discarded rather than recycled, even though they are recyclable materials.

Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction involves working in rounds to create a cylindrical shape that wraps around a coffee cup. The pattern emphasizes practical fit over precise gauge, though crocheters are advised to check the fit after the first round to ensure the sleeve will be snug enough around the cup. If the sleeve is too loose, you can decrease the number of stitches; if it's too tight, you can work with a looser tension. This flexibility makes the pattern adaptable to different crochet styles and cup sizes.
Stitches Used
While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names in detail, the pattern uses basic crochet stitches worked in rounds to construct the cylindrical sleeve shape. The pattern is designed to be accessible to beginners, indicating that only fundamental crochet stitches are involved.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn Weight: Aran weight
- Yarn Suggestion: Stylecraft Special Aran in Pale Rose and Khaki (or any Aran weight yarn of your choice)
- Hook Size: 4 mm crochet hook
Pattern Notes
Tension is not critical for this project, making it forgiving for beginners. However, if you crochet with a loose tension, the sleeve may not fit snugly around your cup. After completing the first round, test the fit on your cup and adjust by decreasing stitches if needed, or by crocheting more tightly in subsequent rounds. This adaptability ensures the finished sleeve will work effectively as an insulating barrier for your beverage.
