Product Description

Nrgwenya is a beautiful shawl created with an eye-catching mosaic technique. It's a great pattern to use a single skein of wonderful variegated or semi solid yarn from your stash – just pair it with an interesting contrastive color to get a unique look! The shawl can be made with DK, worsted or even bulky yarn – just remember to go up with the hook size, too, if you decide to use heavier yarn (I'd recommend 5mm for worsted and 6mm for bulky, but it'll be best to just make a swatch and see which one works best for you).

Yarn: DK yarn MC: green (I used variegated for an interesting effect) - 284 yards (260 meters) CC: black – 418yd/380m

Feel free to join Cute and Kaboodle’s Ravelry Group! We have C/KALs and games and giveaways - hope you’ll come and play! You can also show your finished shawl there!

Nrgwenya Crochet Shawl by Justyna Kacprzak

What Is Being Made

Nrgwenya is an advanced-level crochet shawl designed by Justyna Kacprzak. This finished shawl measures 52 inches (130 centimeters) in width and 26 inches (65 centimeters) in depth, making it a substantial accessory piece suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The design showcases a striking visual impact through its construction method and color interplay.

Mosaic Crochet Technique

The defining characteristic of Nrgwenya is its use of the mosaic crochet technique, which creates an eye-catching patterned fabric. Mosaic crochet is an advanced technique that involves carrying yarn colors inside stitches and strategically dropping and picking up colors to form geometric patterns. This method allows crafters to create complex, multi-colored designs while working with relatively simple stitch sequences, making it visually impressive despite the straightforward execution once the technique is mastered.

Yarn and Color Strategy

The pattern is designed to showcase yarn beautifully through its two-color construction. The main color (MC) calls for 284 yards (260 meters) of DK weight yarn in green, with the designer using a variegated yarn for added visual interest and depth. The contrasting color (CC) requires 418 yards (380 meters) of black yarn. The combination of a variegated or semi-solid primary yarn paired with a contrasting solid color creates a unique, personalized look. Crafters are encouraged to use yarns from their existing stash, making this pattern an excellent way to repurpose beautiful yarn combinations.

Yarn Weight Flexibility

Nrgwenya is designed with versatility in mind and can be worked in multiple yarn weights: DK, worsted, or bulky weight. When using heavier yarns, the hook size should be increased accordingly—the designer recommends 5mm hooks for worsted weight and 6mm hooks for bulky weight. However, swatching is encouraged to ensure the best fabric drape and appearance for your specific yarn choice, as individual tension and yarn characteristics may vary.

Crochet Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern utilizes a range of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build the mosaic structure:

  • ch – chain stitch, the foundation of crochet work
  • sc – single crochet, a short, tight stitch
  • hdc – half double crochet, a medium-height stitch
  • dc – double crochet, a taller stitch used frequently in shawl patterns
  • trc – triple crochet, an extra-tall stitch for open, lacy sections
  • fpdc – front post double crochet, a textured stitch that works around the post of previous stitches
  • bpdc – back post double crochet, similar to fpdc but worked from the back, creating dimensional texture
  • chsp – chain space, the gap created by chain stitches between other stitches, commonly used to create openwork

Skill Level and Pattern Format

Nrgwenya is classified as an advanced crochet pattern, making it suitable for experienced crocheters who are comfortable with post stitches, color changes, and the mosaic technique. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to full instructions and any accompanying charts or diagrams. This format makes it easy to print or reference on devices while working.
