Nr. 323 – 19 – 10. Christmas Snowman Guest Towel

What is Being Made

This is a Christmas-themed guest towel featuring a snowman design, created by designer Lotte Vilstrup Nielsen. The finished towel measures approximately 33 x 49 cm (13 x 19 inches), making it an ideal size for guest use. The snowman motif is incorporated into the knitted fabric through strategic color changes and stitch placement, creating a festive holiday decoration that is both functional and decorative.

Craft and Difficulty Level

This project is classified as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters who are just starting their crafting journey. Despite its beginner designation, the towel teaches fundamental knitting skills in a practical application. The pattern has been test knitted by Pia Jørgensen, ensuring accuracy and feasibility for crafters at this skill level.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The snowman guest towel employs several essential knitting techniques:

  • Cast on: The foundation technique used to create the initial 89 stitches on the needle
  • Knit stitch (k): The primary forward-facing stitch that creates the characteristic V-pattern texture
  • Purl stitch (p): The reverse of the knit stitch, creating a bumpy texture and used strategically throughout the pattern
  • Slip stitch: The first stitch of every row is slipped purl-wise with yarn at back of work, a technique that creates neat, finished edges
  • Ribbed knitting: The pattern begins with alternating knit and purl stitches (k1, p1 pattern) to create an elastic ribbed border

The snowman design is created through intarsia knitting or color work, where the pattern transitions from ribbed edging into stockinette stitch sections with strategic color changes to form the snowman motif. The pattern includes both solid knit and purl rows as well as mixed-stitch rows that create the visual snowman design.

Materials Required

Yarn: The towel is crafted using 100% cotton yarn in a 4-ply weight. You will need 186 yards (170 meters) total, which equals 2 balls of 50g yarn. Cotton is an excellent choice for guest towels as it is absorbent, durable, and provides a crisp finish. The yarn can be worked in any color, offering flexibility for personalization and color coordination with your décor.

Needles: The pattern calls for 30 cm (12-inch) knitting needles in size 3.25 mm (U.S. size 3). These straight needles are appropriately sized for the 4-ply yarn weight and the finished dimensions of the towel.

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with casting on 89 stitches and establishing a ribbed edge using the k1, p1 alternating stitch pattern for the first four rows. This ribbed section creates a neat, elastic border. The pattern then transitions into stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) with color changes and strategic stitch placement to create the snowman design. The snowman motif emerges through rows that combine knit and purl stitches in specific sequences, such as "k15, p20, k46," which creates the visual elements of the snowman figure against the background.
