Product Description
The Nostalgia Keyhole Scarf is knit flat with a simple garter and rib stitch, with the vintage-style keyhole detail adding functionality and flair. My great grandmother used to knit her five kids’ scarves with this handy little detail worked in to make sure they didn’t lose them while running outside!
The yarn used for the sample is Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk, held double. A great replacement would be Debbie Bliss Angel, also held double.

What Is Being Made
The Nostalgia Keyhole Scarf is a knitted accessory featuring a vintage-inspired keyhole detail that serves both functional and decorative purposes. This design draws inspiration from traditional scarf-making practices, incorporating a practical keyhole opening that prevents the scarf from being lost—a clever feature originally used by the designer's great grandmother to keep her five children's scarves secure during outdoor play.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This scarf is knit flat, meaning it is worked back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round. The flat construction allows for straightforward shaping and the integration of the keyhole detail without complex stitch manipulation. The vintage-style keyhole detail is worked directly into the fabric during knitting, adding both functionality and flair to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The Nostalgia Keyhole Scarf employs two primary stitch patterns:
- Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, this fundamental stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter stitch is ideal for scarves as it lies flat and provides excellent drape.
- Rib Stitch: A combination of knit and purl stitches worked in vertical columns, rib stitch creates an elastic, textured fabric that recovers well and adds visual interest to the design.
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including K (knit), P (purl), CO (cast on), RS (right side), WS (wrong side), Slp (slip purlwise), and St(s) (stitch/stitches).
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for lace weight yarn, creating a delicate, lightweight scarf suitable for layering or wearing in transitional seasons. The pattern provides yarn substitution recommendations, including Sandnes Garn Silk Mohair and Debbie Bliss Angel, offering flexibility for fiber preferences and availability. The gauge for this project is 20 stitches and 28 rows over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in the garter and rib stitch pattern when measured on an unblocked swatch.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle simple stitch patterns and basic shaping. The straightforward garter and rib stitches combined with flat knitting construction make this an accessible project for developing knitters, while the vintage keyhole detail adds a charming design element without requiring advanced techniques.
