Product Description
Nebbiolo is a cozy, bulky cowl that can be worn either long or short, wrapped around the neck. The word "nebbia" is from the Italian for fog, and this would be just perfect on a cold and foggy day to add a little warmth and brightness to your mood!
I think bulky yarn needs a distinct and bold motif like this one. It's a combination of cables and lace diamonds - the cables showcase the squooshiness of the merino and the lace gives the cowl a bit of lightness and texture. The Plucky Knitter, Bulky does the rest with the gorgeous fiber. This purple is Dancing Queen, so rich and vibrant, but I think Nebbiolo would be gorgeous in any color. It's easy to alter the pattern for either extra length or width and instructions are included.
A solid, semi-solid or Heathered yarn with softness and drape will work as a substitute, the design would be lost in a more variegated yarn. Don't forget to test your gauge.
A suggested substitute yarn is shown below.
Nebbiolo Cowl by BabyCocktails
Project Overview
Nebbiolo is a knitted cowl design inspired by the bold, complex character of Italian Nebbiolo wine. Named after the Italian word "nebbia" meaning fog—referencing the misty mountains of Piemonte where these grapes are cultivated—this cowl combines visual sophistication with practical warmth. The design is ideal for cool, foggy days and offers versatile styling options: wear it long as a single loop or wrap it twice around your neck for added coziness and depth.
What Is Being Made
This is a knitted cowl, a tubular neckwear accessory that provides substantial coverage and warmth. The finished cowl measures 10 inches deep and 45 to 49.5 inches long, making it generously proportioned for layering and wrapping. The design accommodates two finished sizes, allowing knitters to choose their preferred length and adjust the pattern further if desired for additional depth or width.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Nebbiolo employs a sophisticated combination of two primary stitch techniques to achieve both visual interest and functional texture:
- Cable stitches – These twisted stitch patterns create the "squooshy" tactile quality and structural integrity of the cowl, providing dimensional depth and a classic knitted aesthetic
- Lace diamonds – Openwork lace motifs are integrated throughout the design to add lightness, visual complexity, and textural contrast against the bold cable elements
The combination of cables and lace diamonds creates a balanced fabric that is neither too dense nor too delicate. The designer emphasizes that bulky yarn requires a distinct, strong motif to showcase the yarn's qualities effectively, and this pairing of techniques accomplishes exactly that goal. The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, which is the standard construction method for seamless tubular accessories.
Materials and Gauge
This intermediate-level pattern is designed for chunky-weight yarn. The sample shown uses The Plucky Knitter Bulky in the Dancing Queen colorway, requiring 3 skeins (300 yards) for the 45-inch size or 3 skeins (350 yards) for the 49.5-inch size. Knitters will need US #10.5 / 6.5mm circular needles measuring 29 inches in length, along with a darning needle for finishing. The pattern is worked to a blocked gauge of 3.5 stitches per 5 rows, which should be verified before beginning to ensure proper finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate in difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with cable and lace techniques, as well as working in the round with circular needles. The pattern offers flexibility for customization, allowing experienced knitters to modify depth and width according to personal preference.
