Nara Knit Top by Regina Moessmer

What is Being Made

Nara is a downloadable knitting pattern for a fitted knit top designed by Regina Moessmer. This intermediate-level garment is constructed using circular needles and features a sophisticated blend of ribbed and lace stitch patterns. The pattern is available in six sizes ranging from XS to XXL, with yardage requirements from 940 yards for the smallest size to 1400 yards for the largest.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The construction utilizes the German short rows method for shaping, which creates smooth transitions in fitted areas without visible gaps. Slanted increases using M1L (make one left) and M1R (make one right) techniques are worked both knitwise and purlwise to maintain stitch definition. The contiguous method is also incorporated into the pattern instructions. Circular needles and double-pointed needles (or magic loop method) are used throughout the construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Nara top features two primary stitch patterns. A ribbing pattern of k3, p2 (knit 3, purl 2) creates vertical texture and elasticity throughout sections of the garment. A lace pattern is also integrated into the design, adding openwork detail and visual interest. Standard decreases including k2tog (knit 2 together) and kfb (knit front and back) increases are used for shaping.

Materials and Tools

The sample garment shown in the pattern was worked with Karen Noe Design Laura yarn, 100% linen, at 50g per 200 meters. This is a 4-ply weight yarn suitable for creating lightweight, breathable garments. The pattern calls for US 2.5 (3.0 mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles (or magic loop alternative), sized to achieve the specified gauge of 26 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) in the ribbing pattern after washing.

Essential tools include stitch markers, a stitch holder or waste yarn for holding stitches, a tapestry needle for finishing, split ring markers for tracking pattern repeats, and blocking tools for finishing the completed garment.
