Product Description
The name of a repeated tessellating design, like the one Jane has used in this design, is called an 'Ogee' pattern in Arabesque design. It took Jane a few weeks to get the design of these blocks right; initially she came up with lots of really complicated ways to create this motif, but in the end it was so simple - funny how sometimes a design process can take so long and then the outcome can be so easy to make!
The pattern for the lantern shape motif is based on a granny hexagon pattern, but Jane has made a few changes to come up with the curved design the tessellates.
Stitches used in this project are ch, ss, dc, tr and dtr.
Mystical Lanterns Crochet Scarf by Jane Crowfoot
What Is Being Made
The Mystical Lanterns Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet scarf featuring a tessellating Ogee pattern inspired by Arabesque design. The scarf showcases repeated lantern-shaped motifs that interlock seamlessly across the fabric, creating a visually striking geometric design suitable for crocheters new to the craft.
Design and Pattern Structure
The lantern shape motif is based on the traditional Granny Hexagon pattern, with modifications made to create curved elements that allow the blocks to tessellate perfectly. The designer, Jane Crowfoot, spent several weeks refining the design process, ultimately arriving at a surprisingly simple construction method despite the complex appearance of the finished scarf. The repeated Ogee pattern creates an intricate visual effect that belies the straightforward techniques used to build each block.
Techniques and Construction Method
This scarf employs a distinctive construction technique credited to designer Dani, which creates a beautiful and unique finished piece through an innovative approach. The method is described as wonderfully simple yet incredibly effective, making it an engaging and enjoyable process for crocheters of all skill levels. The block-based construction allows crafters to build the scarf by creating individual motifs that connect together through the tessellating design.
Stitches Used
While the specific crochet stitches are referenced through the Granny Hexagon foundation pattern, the exact stitch list is detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern. The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet techniques adapted to create the curved lantern shapes that form the Ogee tessellation.
Materials
This project uses 4-ply yarn weight, which is ideal for creating defined stitch definition and a refined drape in the finished scarf. The appropriate crochet hook size for 4-ply yarn will be specified in the complete pattern documentation.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Mystical Lanterns Scarf is accessible to crocheters who are new to the craft. Despite the sophisticated appearance of the tessellating Ogee pattern, the underlying construction techniques are straightforward and manageable for those just starting their crochet journey.
