Product Description

Mystic Meadows is a rectangular stole that draws its inspiration from flowering midsummer meadows with colorful flowers of every hue.

In this design I was experimenting with the types of stitches used. The shawl starts at one edge with meandering flower stems, which are crowned with tulip-like flowers. After that, a background pattern of cables and lace is introduced, and there are some floral bouquets covering the back of the shawl. The last section is festooned with butterflies.

This shawl contains lace, cables, nupps, and various wraps. It also has lace patterning on both right side and wrong side rows to challenge the knitter. The pattern never really repeats, so there is always something new and interesting happening.

Mystic Meadows Lace Shawl by Anna Dalvi

Project Overview

Mystic Meadows is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Anna Dalvi. This elegant lace stole combines delicate openwork patterning with a generous finished size, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons. The design showcases charted lace techniques that create intricate visual interest throughout the piece.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a rectangular lace shawl, technically classified as a stole due to its dimensions. The finished blocked measurements are 75 cm wide by 204 cm long (approximately 29.5 inches by 80 inches), creating a long, narrow silhouette ideal for draping around the shoulders or wearing as a wrap. The substantial length and moderate width make this design suitable for layering over dresses, cardigans, or wearing as a standalone statement piece.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Mystic Meadows shawl is constructed using charted knitting patterns, where all rows are provided in chart format rather than written instructions. This approach allows knitters to visualize the lace pattern development row by row. The pattern begins with a long-tail cast-on of 95 stitches, establishing the width of the shawl. The design progresses through multiple charted sections that build the lace motifs systematically from cast-on edge to bind-off.

The pattern includes flexibility for customization through four distinct lengthening options. Knitters can repeat specific row ranges—such as rows 163-182, rows 273-292, rows 323-382, or rows 163-182 after row 402—to add additional length to the finished piece. This modular approach allows crafters to adjust the final dimensions according to personal preference or yarn availability.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The shawl features stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which provides a smooth, refined canvas for the lace elements. The charted sections incorporate lace stitches that create openwork patterns characteristic of decorative shawl design. The gauge for this project is 13 stitches and 21 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch when blocked, which is essential information for achieving accurate finished dimensions and proper drape in the lace sections.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Signature Superwash Sock Yarn from Brooklyn Handspun. This yarn is composed of 100% merino wool with a yardage of 480 yards (439 meters) per 113-gram skein. The pattern specifies the "Prezzie" colorway or similar yarn, indicating that approximately 960 yards of yarn are required to complete the shawl at its standard finished size. The 4-ply weight classification provides excellent stitch definition for lace work while maintaining the delicate drape expected in shawl construction.

Tools: Knitters will need 4.5 mm needles (US size 7) to achieve the specified gauge with the recommended yarn. A large-eyed, blunt needle is also required, primarily for weaving in yarn ends after completion and potentially for blocking purposes.

Blocking and Finishing

The finished size measurements provided—75 cm by 204 cm—represent the dimensions after blocking, which is a crucial finishing step for lace shawls. Blocking opens up the lace stitches, evens out the fabric, and sets the final shape and drape of the shawl. This step transforms the knitted fabric from its compressed state off the needles into the elegant, refined accessory shown in the finished piece.

Skill Level and Pattern Complexity

Classified as an intermediate-difficulty pattern, Mystic Meadows is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle charted lace patterns. The intermediate designation reflects the need to read and follow lace charts accurately, maintain consistent tension throughout extended charted sections, and understand how to execute the various stitches indicated in the chart symbols. The length of the project—with over 400 rows in the base pattern—requires sustained focus and attention to detail, though the repetitive nature of charted patterns can become meditative for experienced knitters.
