Product Description

This shawl draws its inspiration from winter, and in particular the breathtaking icicles found during the early and late parts of winter. The shawl can be knit as a square shawl or a triangular shawl (or why not one of each?).

My shawl is knit on 3.25 mm needles, using 10/2 Tencel (laceweight) yarn from Yarntopia Treasures (1,050 yds per 4 oz skein) in the New York colourway. The square shawl uses 2 skeins (approx. 2,100 yds) of the Tencel yarn, and the triangular shawl uses 1 skein (approx 1,050 yds). As always, yarn substitutions are encouraged.

Mystic Ice Knitted Shawl by Anna Dalvi

Project Overview

Mystic Ice is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design inspired by the delicate beauty of winter icicles. This downloadable PDF pattern offers knitters the flexibility to create either a generous square shawl or a dramatic triangular shawl, making it adaptable to different preferences and yarn quantities.

What Is Being Made

The Mystic Ice pattern produces a lace shawl available in two distinct silhouettes. The square shawl version measures 150 cm x 150 cm (59" x 59") when blocked, providing substantial coverage. The triangular shawl option features a wingspan of 175 cm (70") with a height of 87 cm (35"), creating an elegant wrap with dramatic proportions. Both versions showcase intricate lace detailing inspired by icicle formations.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate knitting project employs lace knitting techniques to create the icicle-inspired stitch patterns. The pattern utilizes an invisible loop cast-on method, which allows knitters to begin from the center and work outward—a technique particularly suited to circular shawl construction. The design incorporates strategic increases and lace stitches to develop the shawl's expanding geometric shape.

Key techniques include:

  • Invisible loop (disappearing loop) cast-on for seamless center construction
  • Circular knitting using both circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs)
  • Cable knitting techniques, requiring a cable needle
  • Stitch markers for pattern repeat management
  • Lace stitch work creating openwork sections
  • Blocking to achieve finished dimensions and pattern definition

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Mystic Ice pattern calls for lace-weight yarn, specifically Lace Yarn from Yarntopia Treasures in the Seaweed colorway or similar yarn. This yarn is composed of 100% tencel, a plant-based fiber known for its fluid drape and lustrous appearance—ideal properties for lace shawls. Each skein provides 1,000 yards (960 meters) and weighs 115 grams.

Yarn requirements vary by shawl version:

  • Square shawl: 2 skeins of lace-weight yarn
  • Triangular shawl: 1 skein of lace-weight yarn

The pattern specifies 3.25 mm (US 7) circular needles and 3.25 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for working the shawl. Additional tools include a cable needle for cable stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a large-eyed blunt needle for weaving in ends and blocking.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern gauge is 12 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in pattern stitch when blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished size. The blocked square shawl measures 150 cm x 150 cm (59" x 59"), while the triangular version spans 175 cm (70") across the wingspan and measures 87 cm (35") in height.

Skill Level and Craftsmanship

Designed for intermediate knitters, Mystic Ice requires comfort with circular knitting, lace techniques, and pattern reading. The progression from center-out construction and the management of multiple stitch markers demand attention to detail and familiarity with shawl knitting conventions. The lace-weight yarn and intricate stitch patterns create a refined finished garment suitable for special occasions or as a showcase project for advancing knitters.
