Product Description
All parts are knitted flat and sewn up at the end. I used 4-ply (fingering) weight yarn but it is possible to work with DK (8-ply) yarn with slightly larger needles. The crochet hook is for making chains. It does not need to be precisely 3mm. it is used to make a flower. The flower is made with easy chains. To work the details as teeth and embroideries, use chenille needles with a sharp point. Finished size: Mummy; 11cm tall, 14cm long, Baby; 6cm tall, 7cm long 10 pages

Mummy and Baby Crocodiles Knitting Pattern
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern by designer Sachiyo Ishii provides instructions for creating a pair of adorable crocodile toys: a larger Mummy crocodile measuring 11cm tall and 14cm long, and a smaller Baby crocodile measuring 6cm tall and 7cm long. These intermediate-level knitted toys are perfect for crafters looking to expand their toy-making skills with a fun, playful design.
What Is Being Made
The pattern creates two stuffed crocodile toys in different sizes, designed to be sewn together as a mother-and-baby pair. The Mummy crocodile serves as the larger companion piece, while the Baby crocodile is a scaled-down version. Both toys are constructed using knitting techniques and finished with toy stuffing to create three-dimensional plush figures suitable for play or decoration.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The crocodile bodies are knitted using fundamental shaping techniques. The Mummy crocodile body begins at the tail and progresses toward the neck, starting with a cast-on of 12 stitches. The pattern employs increases (using the kfb technique—knit through the front and back of the same stitch) to expand the fabric width, creating the body's dimensional shape. Decreases are incorporated using k2tog (knit two together) and skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) techniques to shape the crocodile's form as needed.
The construction method involves knitting flat pieces that are subsequently assembled. Seams are sewn using the mattress stitch, a technique that creates nearly invisible seams when worked on the right side of the fabric. Long yarn ends are intentionally left at the beginning and end of knitting sections to facilitate sewing, ensuring secure and neat assembly of the toy pieces.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic fabric texture
- Knit (K): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P): Reverse knit stitch used on wrong-side rows to create stocking stitch
- Kfb (knit through front and back): An increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used to expand the crocodile's body width
- K2tog (knit two together): A decrease technique combining two stitches into one, used for shaping
- Skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over): An alternative decrease technique providing directional shaping control
- Yf (yarn forward): A stitch manipulation technique for creating texture or shaping variations
Materials and Supplies
Yarn: The pattern uses 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn in a blend of 55% Nylon and 45% Acrylic. Specific yardage is approximately 50g per 226 meters. Color requirements include 25g of yellow green [A] for the primary crocodile body color, 20g of pastel yellow [B], 5g of white for details, and small amounts of coral pink, pink, yellow, and dark brown for embellishment (noted as not essential). The yarn weight and fiber content provide durability and structure suitable for toy construction.
Tools and Equipment: Crafters will need 3mm knitting needles for the main knitting work and a 3mm crochet hook for finishing details. A chenille needle is required for sewing seams and attaching embellishments. Toy stuffing fills the completed pieces to create the three-dimensional form.
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 26 stitches by 34 rows over a 10cm by 10cm square in stocking stitch. Achieving correct tension is important for ensuring the finished toys match the intended dimensions and have the proper fabric density for holding stuffing securely.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have mastered basic knitting techniques including casting on, knit and purl stitches, and simple increases and decreases. The toy assembly and finishing work, including mattress stitch seaming and embellishment application, provide additional skill development opportunities for crafters progressing beyond beginner projects.
